Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Form underneath the Grand Cru Hengst and oligocene limestone with active calcium carbonate, the sample off the 2017 Alsace Riesling Clos Häuserer de Wintzenheim was not yet fully fermented to dry but offers a clear and tart grapefruit flavor. Fascinatingly pure and chalky-mineral on the palate, with a powdery texture and lovely grapefruit and lemon flavors, this is a concentrated, substantial and very long Riesling with very fine tannins. A gorgeous, impressive Clos on its way to dry. Tasted October 2018. No Turckheim Riesling was produced in 2017.

Description
A breeze of history blows through the Wintzenheim vineyards when we talk about Zind Humbrecht Riesling Clos Häuserer. This wine was born in 1973, when Léonard Humbrecht planted a small plot of 1.16 ha on deep limestone marl soils, at the foot of the Grand Cru Hengst, in a place historically known as Unterersoedlen. To avoid confusion with other plots, the family decided to call it "Häuserer", in reference to the ancient road that runs through it - "the road to the houses" - evoking a 6th century Roman settlement. The eastern orientation, the sheltered, warm climate and an oligocene bedrock barely a metre deep give the vineyard an extraordinary regularity, although not without risk: its natural shelter makes it vulnerable to early frosts. Here, the Riesling finds an ideal terroir to express minerality and tension, under a biodynamic approach that prioritises purity and respect for the terroir.
Winemaking
The vinification of Zind Humbrecht Riesling Clos Häuserer follows a minimalist approach: manual harvesting, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and ageing on fine lees for 12 months in large vats. No new wood is used, seeking absolute transparency in the expression of the soil. Fermentation is slow and at a low temperature, which allows the aromatic precision to be preserved. After this ageing time, the wine is bottled without aggressive fining, in order to preserve its austere and sharp character.
Taste
Pale yellow, almost ethereal, Zind Humbrecht Riesling Clos Häuserer shows a deeply mineral nose, with aromas of wet stone, sharp citrus fruits -lime, grapefruit- and a restrained herbal background. It is a wine that does not seek to please with exuberance, but reveals itself with patience. On the palate, the acidity is incisive, electric, with a surprisingly creamy texture from the clay in the soil. Completely dry, with a taut, precise structure, it offers a long, saline finish, with echoes of lemon zest and chalk. Zind Humbrecht Riesling Clos Häuserer is for those seeking purity, verticality and a direct connection with the earth. A serious, vibrant wine, and deeply linked to its origin.
