Made with the best grapes from their best plots, the 2019 Sot Lefriec is a blend of 50% old-vine Cariñena, 30% Merlot (40-year-old vines) and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon that they wait to develop good ripeness until they pick it. The style has not changed through the years; they use destemmed grapes and do a protective vinification, and this is a serious, ripe and generously oaked red for the long haul, initially marked by the élevage but with freshness and balance. It matured in new and used French oak barrels for 25 months. It has 13.9% alcohol and a pH of 3.6. 2019 seems to be a very good and balanced year. It was bottled in January 2023. Experience tells me this wine ages very slowly in bottle.

Description
Sot Lefriec is an exceptional wine produced in the DO Penedès region of Catalonia by Alemany I Corrió. The composition of Sot Lefriec is a carefully balanced blend of Carignan ( 40%), Merlot (40%) and other varieties (20%). This combination of grapes brings a unique complexity and depth to the wine. Viticulture is carried out in vineyards between 35 and 70 years old, located on clay and limestone soils. Production is deliberately kept low, around 3000 kg per hectare, following practices of reasoned struggle, an approach that balances human intervention and natural methods.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for Sot Lefriec is meticulous and artisanal. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, followed by pre-fermentative cold maceration with wild yeasts. Malolactic fermentation, which softens the wine's acids, is carried out with wild bacteria in 228-litre French oak barrels. The wine then ages in these barrels for 26 months, using 50% new oak, which contributes to its distinctive flavour profile.
Taste
Sot Lefriec is noted for its smoky oak, blackcurrant and cherry aromas, with a hint of herbs. On the palate, it is dry with mild acidity. The wine's density and concentration are balanced, integrating harmoniously with the toasted oak. The wine's depth is enriched with hints of dark chocolate and minerals. The finish is very long, with a slight hint of herbs and camphor.
