Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The NV Quinta da Ervamoira RP 10 Year Old Tawny Port is a typical field blend aged in vats. It was bottled in February 2018 with 114 grams of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. This is pretty much on par with the last release I saw (the 2015 bottling). Lush, complex and concentrated (relative to a 10 Year Tawny), this focused tawny performs beautifully. The finish is bright, spicy and sweet. The pricing may be better on the 'street,' as this is just a list price ('suggested retail'), but this is a 10 Year Tawny that delivers.

Description
Ramos Pinto Quinta de Ervamoira 10 Years Old Tawny Porto stems from a very Portuguese and very noble idea: to tame time without losing the energy of the rock. At Quinta de Ervamoira, in the Douro, Ramos Pinto works a landscape of schist soils, dry heat and vines clinging to a hard, almost ascetic soil. From this landscape come Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinto Cão and Tinta Barroca – varieties that here seek not easy exuberance, but depth, tension and that aged bouquet characteristic of the great Port wines. The estate’s ambition was not to produce a complacent tawny, but a 10-year-old Tawny Port with a distinct sense of place: a wine that speaks of the estate, the stone and patience.
Production
The base of Ramos Pinto Quinta do Bom Retiro 20 Years Old Tawny Porto is a blend of several vintages with an average ageing of 10 years. The younger wines contribute vigour, fruit and freshness; the older ones, complexity, pedigree and that oxidative patina that defines a great Tawny Porto. Following vinification, the wine is aged in wood, where its texture refines, the alcohol becomes more rounded, and it develops that noble combination of nuts, candied fruit and sweet spice. Bottling is not intended to preserve youthfulness, but rather to capture a precise moment of balance between energy and maturity.
Taste
In the glass, Ramos Pinto Quinta de Ervamoira 10 Years Old Tawny Porto displays an orange-tinged brick colour with mature highlights. The nose opens with candied orange, dried apricots, prunes and a background of delicate vanilla, fine oak and light cocoa. Nothing feels heavy; everything is woven together with serenity and precision. On the palate, it is round, silky and full-bodied, but a delicate acidity soon emerges, giving the wine structure and preventing any excess. There are notes of dried apricot, orange peel, ripe plum, a hint of walnut and a perfectly integrated warmth. The finish is long, harmonious, slightly fresh and deeply gastronomic.
