Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2024 Giró de Abargues comes from Giró/Garnacha vines facing the sea. It fermented with 30% full clusters and indigenous yeasts in stainless steel with a soft vinification and matured in used 500-liter French oak barrels for one year. Mendoza always looks for the expression of iron in the soils, and in this vintage, it's very clear. The wine is elegant and harmonious, subtle, a little shy even. The palate is stunning! It has balance, elegance, silky tannins and a super silky mouthfeel. It comes in at 13.5% alcohol with six grams of acidity and is vertical and with tension. It has a medium-bodied palate and fine tannins and very good overall balance and freshness. This is at the level of the 2021, the last vintage of this wine to be released, as no 2022 or 2023 vintages of this wine were bottled and the wine instead contributed to blends. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2025.

Description
Pepe Mendoza Casa Agrícola Giró de Abargues is a red wine that comes from the Alicante region. Made with the Giró variety, this grape is native to the Marina Alta and has historical connections with Mallorca and Sardinia. This unique variety has been a treasure that has linked the Marina Alta with these regions for more than five centuries.
Elaboration
From Abargues, in the Pla de Llíber, this wine is a single-varietal wine made from a 73-year-old plot. The wine is made with a gentle, manual, delicate maceration with skins and 30% stems. Autochthonous yeasts from the vineyard are used and fermented in 1000L tanks. After a primary fermentation of 8-10 days, the wine is pressed and undergoes malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. The wine is aged for 12 months in new and one-year-old 500-litre French Allier oak barrels.
Taste
Pepe Mendoza Casa Agrícola Giró de Abargues has an expressive, deep and complex nose. Notes of undergrowth and wet earth can be appreciated, evoking the importance of the terroir in the elaboration of this wine. In the mouth, it is powerful, with very noble tannins, fresh and with good acidity. It is recommended to be served at a temperature of 16ºC. Its flavour reminds us of the ferric soils and the sanguine notes, with very noble and powerful tannins that will allow it to live for many years. It is a wine that, without a doubt, must be tasted.
This wine is not only a representation of the tradition and history of the region, but also of the effort and passion of the Pepe Mendoza Casa Agrícola winery to produce high quality wines that reflect the unique character of the Alicante terroir. With a limited production and a high score in various wine guides, the Giró de Abargues is a wine that should not be missing in any wine lover's collection.
Pepe Mendoza Gironet + Nat
Gironet + Nat is a jewel of the Pepe Mendoza Casa Agrícola winery, located in Alicante. This red wine is made from one of the only two clones of the Giró variety, a variety of Sardinian origin that was brought to Spain by the Mallorcans after the Spanish conquest of the island. Currently, there are only 100 hectares planted with this variety in Alicante and 7 in Mallorca. What started as an experiment in 2016 has become the essence of Casa Agrícola's wines. Giró's old vines represent a large part of the winemaking history and of the winery.
Winemaking
In terms of winemaking and ageing, the wine is minimally intervened. It is fermented in a simple way with small daily pumping-overs in two 2,000-litre tanks. No enzymes are used, the wine is not clarified, microfiltered or chilled. Indigenous yeasts from the vineyard are used and the entire process is carried out in two 2,000-litre vats. The primary fermentation lasts 7 days and the pressing is done with the whole cluster in a manual wooden press. Finally, it is aged for 7 months in 2,000-litre vats and bottled without added sulphites.
Taste
Pepe Mendoza Gironet + Nat is characterised by its cherry colour with a violet rim. On the nose, it presents aniseed and fennel aromas full of freshness, followed by notes of disturbed earth and rockroses. On the palate, it offers a crisp and fresh passage that fills the palate. It can be described as a grassy version of pinot noir, with hints of red fruit, red cherry and fresh fennel bread with fennel seed, almost aniseed-like. Its young and pleasant tannins make it ideal for aperitifs. It is a balanced and light wine, made from 100% Gironet.
