Reserva red wine is a term originating in La Rioja and adopted by other appellations such as Ribera del Duero or Penedés for wines aged for 36 months in barrel and bottle, with a minimum of 1 year in barrel.
Increasingly, the red reserva category in the legislation on back labels is on the way to extinction as it corresponds to the canons of the classic school of Rioja wines. At present, many wineries are avoiding this category as consumers are increasingly opting for wines with shorter ageing periods in order to preserve the fruity character of the wine while at the same time supplying the strong demand.
