The 2022 Les Perrières de Lafleur is the broadest, most unctuous rendition of this wine to date, but it retains its taut, minerally identity for all that. Offering up aromas of mulberries, violets and pen ink, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and incisive, with terrific depth and persistence. As readers will remember, Les Perrières derives from parcels situated on the higher-altitude plateau of Fronsac, planted with vine material from Château Lafleur.

From the rugged edges of the limestone plateau of Fronsac to the savoir-faire of one of Pomerol's most emblematic dynasties, Lafleur Les Perrières is born of a vision driven by passion and precision. The idea of making this wine came after almost a decade of experimentation - the first "Acts" - when the Guinaudeaus wanted to explore what their famous Bouchet (Cabernet Franc) would express on the chalky soils of Fronsac. This bold decision, the result of a massive selection of old vines, gave birth to a new "cru", with a perfect harmony between the soil and the variety. The blend combines Merlot and Cabernet Franc, reflecting a symbiosis of voluptuousness and structure, resulting in a unique wine, born on the edge between the tradition of Pomerol and the bravura of Fronsac. This fusion, with its frankly chalky soils and shallow slopes, confers an unmistakable mineral purity.

Winemaking

The Lafleur Les Perrières grapes are harvested entirely by hand, with a triple selection process: two sorting operations in the vineyard and one in the cellar, to guarantee only the most impeccable fruit. The grapes are vinified in cement and stainless steel tanks, where each variety remains separately, with gentle maceration and measured extractions, always at a controlled temperature, around 30°C. The process lasts between 15 and 25 days, depending on the raw material and phenolic maturity. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, one third of which are new and two thirds one year old, which provides tension and structure without dulling its minerality. Bottling, in dark green Grand Cru style bottles, takes place in the second year after the harvest.

Taste

Lafleur Les Perrières displays a sensory palette of refined intensity. On the nose, notes of ripe red plum, blackberries, exotic spices and incense emerge, enveloped by subtle toasted oak that adds complexity without saturating. Hints of wild strawberries, cherry skin and hints of toasted leaf tea also emerge. On the palate, it is a powerful but refined wine, with firm, precise tannins that support a direct, clean, almost tautological attack. The minerality, marked by a saline streak, blends with a vibrant nerve of acidity that gives nerve and freshness, maintaining balance throughout. The texture is taut, almost athletic, with a length that extends into a dry, linear finish, marked by echoes of graphite, wet earth and subtle spices.

Lafleur Les Perrières does not seek opulence, but restrained elegance: it is a conceptual, almost philosophical Bordeaux Supérieur, which vindicates terroir and Cabernet Franc in all its expressiveness. Ideal as an accompaniment to medieval French stews or red meats with baroque sauces, it demands a palate that loves raw minerality, tension and fine textures - a wine for purists, but with poise and depth.
