Description
La Maldición Tinto Fino originates in the most austere and authentic part of the Vinos de Madrid Designation of Origin, where the land gives nothing away and the vineyard has to fight for every metre. Marc Isart soon realised that the aim here was not to create a modern, artificial-tasting red, but to revive a style of Madrid red wine that is far more honest, earthier and more vibrant. Old vines trained in the traditional bush style, sustainable viticulture, dry-farmed, clay-limestone soils and an altitude that lends the wine vigour and freshness. The wine’s uniqueness also lies in its blend: Tinto Fino with a small proportion of Malvar, a bold, deeply local decision that gives the wine a special energy. It does not seek volume, it does not seek oak, it does not seek to please everyone. It aims to speak of the landscape, of refined rusticity, of tension and of drinkability.
Production
The grapes are harvested by hand from old, low-yielding vines. For La Maldición Tinto Fino, the Tinto Fino is destemmed and blended with Malvar, reviving a historic local tradition. Fermentation is spontaneous, using indigenous yeasts, and takes place in concrete tanks, which preserve the pure character of the fruit and the terroir. The wine then spends around 5 months in concrete tanks before bottling. No dominant oak, no sweetness from ageing. Everything is designed to preserve the wine’s verticality, freshness and that honest texture that makes this Spanish wine dangerously drinkable.
Flavour
La Maldición Tinto Fino does not open with exuberant fruit or velvety smoothness. Instead, it comes across as stony, dry, almost dusty at first, as if the soil were speaking before the fruit. Then come blackberry, red plum, tart cherry, a hint of dried herbs, a touch of liquorice and a very subtle earthy note. On the palate it is juicy, lively, fresh, with polished yet firm tannins. Malvar doesn’t just offer aromas; it cuts through. It offers a sense of lightness and airiness, with an almost unexpected briny quality. The finish is straightforward, spicy, mineral and very clean. A Tempranillo with a sincere, austere and tremendously food-friendly profile.
