The 2022 La Cerqueta is getting more and more elegant and less earthy than the past, with more floral notes and more red fruit. The single-vineyard Garnacha is from a 75-year-old dry-farmed and head-pruned plot of 1.18 hectares at 630 meters altitude on slate soils. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and 100% full clusters that were foot trodden in concrete and had a long maceration of 81 days, and it matured in oak foudres. It has 13.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.2 and 6.1 grams of acidity but comes through as a little riper than the La Tejera that I tasted next to it. It has a medium-bodied palate with abundant, fine-grained tannins and a slight earthiness. 3,744 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2024.

Description
Frontonio La Cerqueta is a red wine made from traditional goblet-trained Grenache vines, sustainably farmed in the "La Cerqueta" plot. Located at an altitude of 630 metres above sea level on blue and grey slate soils, the vineyards are over 75 years old.
Winemaking
Frontonio La Cerqueta is obtained after a manual harvest in 18 kg boxes and a fermentation in cement vats with autochthonous yeasts for 60 days. Subsequently, it is aged for 12 months in oak vats, which gives it great complexity and balance.
Taste
Frontonio La Cerqueta stands out for its vibrant and energetic character. The nose is dominated by aromas of tart wild strawberries, with notes of thyme and incense. On the palate, it has fresh acidity, firm but silky tannins and a long, flavoursome finish. The ageing in foudres softens the tannins and brings out its mineral character, provided by the slate soils. It is a wine of great freshness and tension, with remarkable aromatic precision and a balance between fruit and mineral notes, making it an ideal choice for lovers of complex, structured wines.
