Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The stony soils high on the north side of the Montagne de Beaune have produced a bright, tensile wine in the 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Clos de l'Écu Monopole, a medium to full-bodied, supple and suave red wine redolent of raspberries, sweet spices, orange zest and licorice.

Features

Description

Clos de L'Écu is an exceptional vineyard in the heart of Burgundy, managed exclusively by Domaine Faiveley, a family winery with more than 200 years of tradition in viticulture. The 2.37 hectare plot, known as Monopole due to its exclusivity within the estate, is located on the southern slopes of the Montagne de Beaune. This vineyard was planted in several stages (1980, 1989, 1994, 1998), which provides a diversity of vines that enriches the complexity of the final wine. The soil is predominantly stony and gravelly, with a low clay content, which allows for excellent drainage and early ripening of the grapes. This unique terroir has earned it the nickname "Côte-Rôtie" due to its resemblance to the prestigious vineyards of the Rhone Valley.

Winemaking

The vinification of Faiveley Beaune 1er Cru Clos de L'Écu begins with a controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of the Pinot Noir, the only variety used in this wine. This process allows the grapes to express their fresh fruit and maintain their vibrant acidity. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out at moderate temperatures, followed by a post-fermentation maceration that contributes to the extraction of fine tannins and deep colour.
Ageing takes place in French oak barrels for approximately 12 to 14 months, with a percentage of new oak usually varying between 20 and 30%, providing an elegant structure and hints of light toast that enriches without overpowering the wine's fruit character. This careful ageing process gives Faiveley Beaune 1er Cru Clos de L'Écu its smooth texture and refined tannic structure, ideal for long ageing and to be fully enjoyed at maturity.

Taste

In terms of organoleptic characteristics, Faiveley Beaune 1er Cru Clos de L'Écu stands out for its intense ruby colour, a prelude to great aromatic expression. On the nose, layers of red fruits such as raspberry and black cherry emerge, with subtle notes of sweet spices (cinnamon and clove) and a touch of mint that adds freshness. On the palate, it is round and velvety, with a balanced acidity that highlights its liveliness. The minerality of the soil provides a taut, precise texture, while the ripe tannins offer a silky grip, generating an enveloping, deep mouthfeel.
With its long, lingering finish, Faiveley Beaune 1er Cru Clos de l'Écu is a wine that invites to be enjoyed on special occasions or in refined pairings, such as with game dishes, red meats or mature cheeses. This Premier Cru is a faithful expression of the elegance of Beaune and the skill of Domaine Faiveley in the production of high-end wines.
