Description
From one of the most radical expressions of the Loire terroir, marked by bare rock and biodynamic precision viticulture, comes Domaine de L'Ecu Orthogneiss, a biodynamic Muscadet that precisely interprets the voice of the rock. The winery, a pioneer in organic farming since 1975 and certified biodynamic by Demeter since 1998, has built its identity on a firm conviction: the wine must be the purest possible expression of its soil.
The south-east-facing plot, which sits on orthogneiss subsoil, has shallow, grainy soils that force the old Melon de Bourgogne vines (45-55 years old) to deepen their roots in search of balance. With yields of 35 hl/ha and meticulous manual work - simple Guyot pruning, ploughing and rigorous selection - this mineral wine from the Loire is born out of the absolute respect for the terroir.
Winemaking
At Domaine de l'Ecu Orthogneiss, the grapes are harvested 100% by hand and enter the winery by gravity, without pumping, preserving the integrity of the fruit. The grapes are pressed with whole bunches in a pneumatic press, without prior de-stemming. Fermentation is carried out exclusively with indigenous yeasts, reinforcing the identity of the terroir.
Ageing on the lees lasts between 15 and 18 months in underground concrete vats. This long ageing on the lees provides texture and depth, while the concrete allows for subtle micro-oxygenation without aromatic interference. Domaine de l'Ecu Orthogneiss has thus established itself as a Muscadet for ageing, capable of evolving for up to 10 years while maintaining tension and freshness.
Taste
In the glass, Domaine de l'Ecu Orthogneiss has a bright white gold colour. The nose is fine and elegant, dominated by notes of pink grapefruit, lemon zest and delicate white flowers, accompanied by toasted almond, mild spices and a clear iodine character.
On the palate, Domaine de l'Ecu Orthogneiss surprises with its initial fullness, quickly sustained by a firm and precise acidity. It is a saline and mineral wine, tense and vertical, where grapefruit and almond core structure the whole. The enveloping texture of the ageing balances its electric energy. The finish is long, marine and deeply salivating. Pure rock transformed into liquid elegance.
