Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Based on the 2018 vintage and disgorged in March 2021 with five grams per liter dosage, Chartogne's newly released NV Brut Sainte Anne reveals inviting aromas of pear, white peach, fresh bread and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and charming, it's seamless and enveloping, with a generous core of fruit, lively acids and a pillowy mousse. It's a lovely wine that wears its heart on its sleeve.

Features

Description

Chartogne Taillet Sainte Anne Brut is a unique sensory expression from the diverse soils of the village of Merfy. Each parcel of the village contributes a part of its identity to create this cuvée. This wine is characterised by revealing its textures throughout the palate, starting with an initial opulence that gives way to a salivating bitterness due to the salts present in the sandy soils. The finish leaves a firm structure reminiscent of the origin of Champagne wines.

Winemaking

Sainte Anne is a blend of several vintages, composed mostly of 50% of wines from the year before bottling and 50% of older wines, reserved from 2 to 5 years. This champagne is a blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir.
Chartogne Taillet Sainte Anne Brut is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in 228, 350 and 2000 litre barrels and foudres. A small portion of this Champagne matures separately in stainless steel tanks, being mostly reserve wines. These wines need oxygen to express the message indicative of their origins.
Each parcel is vinified in a different way, allowing unique and identifiable characteristics to be obtained. After completing the ageing of the wines from each parcel, they are combined to create a blend representative of Merfy wines, seeking the crystalline texture emblematic of Merfy's sandy limestone terroirs.

Taste

Chartogne Taillet Sainte Anne Brut has an evocative aromatic nose full of elderflower and apple blossom, with toasty notes of brioche and fresh hazelnuts. It stands out for its great purity and fruit expression, such as apple and quince. The lemon-like acidity provides an excellent acid structure that harmonises the fruity and yeasty notes. Before the finish, a wave of dry minerality and salinity hits the palate, leaving a desire for more. The strong minerality harmonises perfectly with the whole, resulting in a balanced and desirable wine.
