Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2023 Léoville Las Cases has turned out very well, offering up classic notes of cassis, violets, pencil shavings and mint, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, dense and layered palate that's classically proportioned, seamless and penetrating. Its sweet tannins are even better integrated than they were in cask, and while this remains a comparatively structured wine for the vintage, it will be more youthfully approachable than I anticipated.

Description
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the most prestigious names in Saint Julien and indeed the whole of Bordeaux. Born from the historic heart of the former Léoville estate and linked for generations to the Delon family, this Grand Vin embodies an uncompromising vision of the terroir: only the finest plots of the Clos Léoville Las Cases are included in the final blend. This exacting standard defines the estate’s character and explains why this wine has become a benchmark for lovers of French red wine with great ageing potential. The blend comprises 83.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10.5% Cabernet Franc and 6% Merlot.
Winemaking
The Château Léoville Las Cases vineyard is situated on a mosaic of Quaternary gravels, gravelly-sandy and gravelly-clay subsoils, as well as clay layers of varying depths. The proximity of the Gironde creates a decisive microclimate, promoting early ripening and protecting the vines from frost. In the cellar, the winemaking process is guided by a philosophy of absolute precision: rigorous grape selection, plot-by-plot vinification and 18 months’ ageing in oak barrels, with a high proportion of new oak. Everything is geared towards preserving the terroir’s identity and crafting a deep, structured and elegant Bordeaux wine.
Taste
In the glass, Château Léoville Las Cases reveals a serious, intense and aristocratic nose, characterised by blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, graphite, fine tobacco and a cigar box. Notes of violets and liquorice also emerge, with a subtle undertone of dark spices. On the palate, it is compact, precise and deeply mineral. The ripe black fruit unfolds against a framework of firm, polished and perfectly sculpted tannins. There is power, but also freshness, tension and length. The finish is extremely long, salty and stony, with hints of blackcurrant, bitter cocoa and a sharpened pencil. A monumental, refined, top-tier wine, destined to thrill for decades to come.
