I found very good balance in the 2022 La Poza de Ballesteros, which is ripe but not heavy, round and polished, with fine tannins and a gentle mouthfeel. It feels like this year benefitted this wine, making it more expressive.

Description

In the highlands of Elvillar, 600 metres above sea level, lies La Poza de Ballesteros, a tiny plot of barely 1.18 hectares, planted in 1960. It is a vineyard of silence, of patient observation, where time does not run, but rests. At Artadi, this estate is understood as a microcosm: a poor, compact soil, dotted with limestone formations that forces the roots to fight for every nutrient. The result is a Tempranillo that does not shout, but leaves its mark. Juan Carlos López de Lacalle decided to bottle this truth without concessions, with a philosophy that shuns appellation labels and embraces the pure expression of the terroir.

The temperate Atlantic climate favours balanced ripening, and the plot's western exposure gives Artadi La Poza de Ballesteros a ripe, enveloping profile. Harvested by hand with a double selection, each cluster is treated with the reverence of the unique.

Winemaking

The fermentation of Artadi La Poza de Ballesteros takes place in open wooden vats, after a cold pre-fermentation maceration of up to 48 hours. During the 10 to 12 days of fermentation, gentle punching down and pumping over are applied, seeking to extract noble tannins and precise fruit. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, followed by 12 months of ageing, with a third of the wine in new wood. Intervention is minimal, always guided by the expression of the place.

Taste

In the glass, Artadi La Poza de Ballesteros presents itself with depth: aromas of black plum, ripe blackberry and graphite. Notes of liquorice, cocoa and an earthy background reminiscent of the soil in which it was born. On the palate, it is enveloping, ample, with polished tannins and a silky but structured texture. The fruit is ripe, but not excessive; the wine maintains nerve and freshness. The finish is long, mineral, with hints of spice, balsamic and elegant austerity. A wine with an introspective character, to drink calmly and attentively.
