Description
Alexandre Bain, a visionary winemaker from the Pouilly Fumé region of Loire Valley, France, has challenged the conventions of traditional viticulture since founding his winery in 2007. Committed to biodynamic agriculture, Bain farms his vineyards without the use of synthetic chemicals, allowing the land to express its true essence. His philosophy focuses on minimal intervention, both in the vineyard and in the winery, seeking to produce wines that authentically reflect their terroir. One bold decision he made was to allow his wines to undergo full malolactic fermentation, an uncommon practice in Sauvignon Blanc winemaking, resulting in richer, more complex wines. Alexandre Bain Terre D'Obus is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes, sourced from clay-limestone soils from the Portlandian period, 135 million years old. This soil composition, together with the mild climate of the Loire, gives the wine a unique minerality and freshness.
Winemaking
Alexandre Bain Terre D'Obus is harvested by hand, meticulously selecting the grapes at their optimum ripening point, generally about two weeks later than other producers in the area, in order to achieve a greater concentration of flavours. The grapes are pressed directly and fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, without the addition of sulphites or enzymes. The wine is aged in cement tanks on fine lees for 14 months, without fining or filtration before bottling. This naturalistic approach allows the wine to develop exceptional depth and complexity, faithfully reflecting its origin.
Taste
Alexandre Bain Terre D'Obus presents an open and rich nose, with notes of dried fruits such as hazelnuts, and floral nuances of acacia and hawthorn. On the palate, it is energetic and well-balanced, showing remarkable depth and great expression. Flavours of spiced apple compote and golden plums intertwine with notes of acacia, hawthorn and honeysuckle, complemented by a hint of pineapple pie. The minerality comes through like crushed stones, accompanied by electric acidity and a smart citrus finish. This wine is a true expression of Sauvignon Blanc in its most natural and pure form, offering a sensory experience that delights and surprises.
