In theory, the 2022 Selección Personal could come from a different vineyard each year, but in the last few years, it has always been produced from a place called Marrate-El Bardallo in Labastida, one of Mendoza's favorite places for high-end wines. It's a 65-year-old two-hectare plot located at 610 meters above sea level on silty clay and limestone soils with a north-south exposition. The uncrushed grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts from a pied de cuve in stainless steel, followed by malolactic in concrete and aging in French oak barrels for 13 months. It's surprisingly fresh for the very warm and dry year—there's no sign of ripeness or heat— and the wine feels very harmonious, balanced and serious, classical and elegant. This year, it has lower alcohol, 13.5% (in 2021 it was 14.5%), because of the hurried ripening, with a pH of 3.83 and 4.58 grams of acidity. It's surprisingly balanced, a different balance because of the lower alcohol and also lower acidity, and it's clean and pure, with elegant, fine, ripe tannins. This is lighter and finer-boned than the 2022 Grano a Grano Tempranillo. It's a triumph over 2022. 6,616 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2024.

Description
Abel Mendoza Selección Personal comes from the organically farmed Marrate vineyard, located in the El Bardallo neighborhood between San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Labastida. The grapes are 70 year old Tempranillo vines grown on terraces in calcareous and stony soils.
Winemaking
The Abel Mendoza Selección Personal wine is harvested by hand, selecting the grapes berry by berry. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and malolactic bacteria fermentation in concrete tanks. The wine ages in fresh French oak barrels for 13 months.
Taste
The palate shows great warmth, medium to full body and a certain austerity with a touch of wood.
The palate is dry and structured, with a pleasant sensation that covers the entire mouth with a balance of complicated, pleasant and fresh sensations.
