The Françoise Bedel & Fils winery is located in the Vallée de la Marne region of France. This winery has been cultivated entirely biodynamically. The winery is spread over 9 hectares of vineyards ranging in age from 30 to 60 years old. These vineyards are spread on both banks of the river Marne, covering areas such as Crouttes-Sur-Marne, Nanteuil-Sur-Marne, Charly-Sur-Marne and Villiers-Saint-Denis.
History
The history of the winery dates back to the first generation of winemakers, Fernand and Marie-Louise Bedel. In 1979, Françoise Bedel took over and assumed responsibility for part of the vineyard. Since then, she has led the winery to adopt environmentally friendly farming practices. In fact, since 1998, Françoise has cultivated the entire vineyard following organic practices, reflecting her love of plants, living in contact with nature and her desire to pass on a healthy land to future generations. Inspired by Antoine de Saint Exupéry's quote: "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children", Françoise constantly seeks harmony and balance in both the vineyard and the wine.
Vineyards
Françoise Bedel 's vineyards are composed of three main grape varieties: Meunier (78%), which brings roundness and softness to the wine; Chardonnay (13%), which adds floral and occasionally mineral notes to the young wine; Pinot Noir (9%), which gives body and strength to the wine.
The terroir is characterised by clay-limestone and alluvial-limestone soils. These mineral-rich soils play a crucial role in the unique expression of the winery's wines.
Philosophy
The Françoise Bedel winery follows a philosophy of biodynamic agriculture. This agricultural practice seeks harmony between the earth, the plants and the cosmos, respecting natural rhythms and using biodynamic preparations to enrich the soil and the plants. The winery uses biodynamic compost containing preparations made from various plants such as yarrow, chamomile, nettle, oak bark, dandelion and valerian flowers.
Vinification is a careful process at Françoise Bedel. One part of the harvest is vinified in oak barrels to reinforce the richness and aromatic complexity. The other part is vinified in small enamelled vats to enhance the purity of the terroirs. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out by yeasts selected by Françoise Bedel, which come naturally from her grapes. Blending is a meticulous task, where perfect harmony is sought between the different notes of the wines.
The winery also follows the"Maria Thun" lunar and planetary calendar to determine the optimal dates for various viticultural activities, from planting to harvesting and vinification.
