Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The single-vineyard 2021 Indie Xisto was produced with grapes from a 70-year-old plot on blue slate in the zone of Alijo in Douro planted with a field blend that has a lot of Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), but many other varieties too. In 2021, he changed the vinification, which was previously in lagar. This fermented in concrete with full clusters and matured in oak foudres and some 500-liter oak barrels. This is always quite closed, and for Seabra, the blue slate gives very closed and austere wines, while yellow slate gives more open and rounder wines. The palate is also very austere and tannic, but the tannins are fine and the wine is clean and balanced. It takes time in the glass to open up to floral and elegant notes and becomes a lot more nuanced in the direction of a red from the Northern Rhône. It's going to need time in bottle. In 2021, most of the reds were around 12.5% alcohol. 4,300 bottles produced.

Description
Xisto Indie Tinto Douro is a clear expression of terroir and place. It is made from sustainably farmed vines and vinified using only indigenous yeasts. In this way, Luis eliminates all potential variability, except for soil type, as an expression of terroir. In terms of grape varieties, the wine is composed of 30% Tinta Roriz, 30% Touriga Franca, 10% Tinta Amarela, 5% Tinta Barroca, 5% Rufete, 5% Touriga Brasileira, 5% Donzelinho Tinto, 5% Malvasia Preta and 5% Touriga Femea. All of them are a blend of indigenous varieties made from vines planted in the 1950s, grown at high altitude and cared for by Luis and his team on blue schist soils at 510 m altitude in a unique vineyard in the Alijó area of the Douro.
Winemaking
After the harvest, the grapes are trodden by foot in traditional stone vats where they ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. It is then racked into stainless steel tanks to decant the coarse particles. The Indie matures for 22 months in used 500-litre French oak barrels.
