Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The red blend 2017 Peixe da Estrada is a village red from Viana do Bolo, from an early harvest after a warm and dry year. It contains red and white grapes (Mencía, Bastardo, Garnacha Tintorera, Negreda, Grao Negro, Caíño, Aramón, Godello, Dona Branca, Colgadeira, Treixadura, Palomino, Caíño Blanco, Moscatel de Grão Miúdo...). The grapes come from different old vineyards in different parishes of the village (Punxeiro, Froxais, Fornelos and Grixoa) where the soils are granite based with significant content of mica and orange quartz. The full clusters fermented with indigenous yeasts at low temperature followed by natural malolactic and 12 months in a combination of 300- and 500-liter French oak barrels and a 3,200-liter oak foudre. This has a smoky twist and a character that goes more toward a Northern Rhône Syrah; it's meaty and juicy, sharper and more streamlined than the 2016. It has very good acidity, pure and pungent flavors and the sapidity of granite. There's no heat or oak in any of these wines. There's a clear step up in complexity and depth from the Camándula. 7,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2019.
