Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The single vintage wines are different, but they are not necessarily better than the solera wines. In fact I preferred the Oloroso VORS to the two single-vintage; I found it more complex and fluid, while the single vintages were more concentrated and powerful, but not as nuanced. I’m talking about the NV Tradicion Oloroso VORS, on average 45-50 years old, which gives the wine a concentration of glycerin and dry extract that is amazing. Silky, very interesting to see the wine that has been blended over the years is more complex. The proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, it is full-bodied, and still follows the same, clean, elegant, precise line of the rest of the wines from Tradicion. Drink 2013-2025.

Description

From the heart of Jerez, in a bodega that seems to resist the passage of time, Oloroso Tradición V.O.R.S. was born. The history of this wine begins with a courageous decision: to recover century-old soleras and relaunch the art of classic Jerez. Joaquín Rivero, founder of Bodegas Tradición, did not want to invent anything new, but to pay tribute to the lost splendour of the Jerez region. He acquired historic butts from great houses such as Domecq and Blázquez, and founded his bodega in 1998 with a clear purpose: to produce museum-quality vintage fortified wines. This Oloroso Tradición V.O.R.S., made from 100% Palomino Fino, represents the pinnacle of that vision. It comes from a purely oxidative ageing for more than 30 years in American oak casks, within the traditional system of criaderas y solera. Production is minuscule, limited to just 3,000 bottles a year, reflecting its rarity.

Elaboration

Oloroso Tradición V.O.R.S. is aged after a complete fermentation, without flor veil, directly exposed to oxygen from the beginning. Each butt brings a unique nuance to this slow-ripening symphony. For more than three decades, Oloroso Tradición V.O.R.S. rests in the half-light of Jerez's cellars, gaining structure, complexity and depth. There is no modern intervention: the entire process remains faithful to tradition, including manual saca and bottling without aggressive filtering.

Taste

On the nose, Oloroso Tradición V.O.R.S. displays a range of toasted nuts - hazelnut, walnut, bitter almond - along with notes of noble woods, blond tobacco, cocoa and a slight hint of old varnish. With each swirl of the glass, echoes of sweet spices, dried orange peel and toffee emerge. The palate is enveloping, dry and powerful, with a velvety texture that flows elegantly across the palate. Balanced acidity adds freshness and tension to a dense, ripe structure. The finish is long, lingering, with hints of old leather, sea salt and bitter chocolate. A contemplative, slow-drinking Jerez wine that rewards those who dare to listen to its complex oxidative narrative.
