Description
In Valdeorras, one of the oldest and least noisy regions of Galicia, where the river Sil meanders between mountains and slate terraces, the story of O Luar do Sil was born, a project that represents the white soul of the legendary Pago de los Capellanes winery. It was the desire to recover the most genuine character of the Godello that pushed the Rodero-Villa family to cross Castilla and enter this Galician corner. There, among morning mists, cold valleys and slate and granite soils, they found their new home.
On their first trip to Valdeorras, they only needed a glass of a local wine, drunk almost by chance in a mountain tavern, to realise that the Godello still had secrets to tell. Against the tide, they decided not to buy intensive production estates or modernise the vineyard excessively: they opted for small, old plots, often difficult to access, where the work had to be done by hand, with respect and patience. The result: a wine that does not seek to impress, but rather to reveal, slowly, the deep mineral soul of this ancient land.
Winemaking
The grapes for O Luar do Sil Godello come exclusively from Valdeorras, a region with a continental climate and clear Atlantic influences. The vines are planted on soils poor in organic matter, with a predominance of decomposed granite and clay, resulting in a precise and restrained expression.
After a manual harvest at dawn, the bunches are carefully selected in the winery. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, without the addition of commercial yeasts. There is no oak ageing or make-up. Only a slight ageing on fine lees for a few months to add volume and complexity without losing freshness. The wine is clarified naturally and bottled unfiltered, thus preserving its most authentic and vibrant character.
Taste
The first taste of O Luar do Sil Godello already reveals its Galician soul: a restrained, almost austere nose, where the mineral is more important than the fruit. There are hints of wet stone, lemon rind, a whisper of camomile and perhaps a trace of raw almond. Everything is expressed with that restraint so typical of a Godello that knows how to wait.
In the mouth is where O Luar do Sil Godello reveals itself completely: tense, linear, with an acidity that does not hit but runs like an electric thread across the tongue. Citrus notes (white grapefruit, lime zest) blend with the salinity of the granitic soil, bringing nerve and freshness. As it opens up, it reveals light notes of green pear and fennel, but without ever losing its sober, elegant profile.
The finish is long, dry, with an almost tactile persistence reminiscent of chalk and granite dust. There are no concessions to exuberance: this is a wine that speaks softly, but says a lot. Ideal for those looking for authenticity rather than artifice, and a gastronomic white that shines with white fish, steamed seafood or vegetable cheeses.
