Description

Massuria, is a single varietal Mencía grown in the region of El Bierzo, more precisely in Villafranca del Bierzo, with an appellation of origin DO Bierzo. The vineyard is composed of very old vines, planted between 1912 and 1970, all non-cloned, which ensures a genetic diversity that brings complexity and authenticity to the wine. These vines are distributed in fourteen plots, covering a total of four hectares. The viticulture is traditional, with goblet pruning, and the entire cultivation and harvesting process is carried out manually. The grapes are harvested in 14 kg boxes to avoid breakage and maintain their integrity.
The vineyard sits on mainly clay and clay-loam soils, with some sandy areas, characteristics that notably influence the mineral profile of the wine. The climate is continental with Atlantic influence, which ensures a marked temperature difference between day and night, helping to preserve the acidity and freshness of the grapes.

Winemaking

After the grapes are harvested by hand, they undergo controlled alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in cement and stainless steel tanks. Gentle extraction techniques are applied, such as pumping over and short macerations, to ensure a good balance of tannins without excessive astringency. The wine is then aged for twelve months in French oak barrels, which gives it subtle woody notes without masking the primary aromas of the grapes. After the barrels, the wine spends six months in stainless steel tanks to harmonise, followed by three years of bottle ageing before being marketed.

Taste

Massuria has a light ruby colour, clean and bright. On the nose, it shows an oxidative character typical of the Mencía variety, with aromas reminiscent of fresh vegetables and mineral touches, providing an interesting and complex aromatic layer. In the mouth, it is fresh, with a well-integrated acidity that balances the wine's structure. The tannins are soft but present, providing a sensation of elegance and persistence on the palate.
This wine is ideal for pairing with sheep's milk cheeses, cured meats and red meats, highlighting its versatility when accompanying a wide variety of dishes.
