Description

From the historic village of Verzenay, in the heart of the Montagne de Reims, Benoît Marguet has raised a silent but resounding manifesto: to restore Champagne to its original soul. Heir to a centuries-old tradition, Benoît has taken radical decisions: converting all his vineyards to biodynamics, completely eliminating the use of herbicides and added sulphur, and even working the vines with horses instead of heavy machinery. His vision is clear: to let the terroir speak without make-up. Marguet Verzenay Grand Cru is born from pure Pinot Noir grown on north-facing limestone soils in one of the coolest and most elegant communes in Champagne. The cool climate and active chalk subsoil give the wine a tension and minerality that clearly distinguishes it from the rest of the region.

Winemaking

Harvesting is done by hand in small crates, and the grapes arrive at the winery unbroken. There, they are gently pressed in a traditional wooden press. The must then ferments spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in used oak barrels, allowing for a more authentic expression of the terroir. After fermentation, the wine rests on its lees in the penumbra of the Cava for at least 30 months, gaining complexity, depth and a more enveloping texture. Finally, once time has worked its transformation, disgorging is carried out without stirring, with extreme care to preserve the delicacy of the bubbles and aromatic integrity. No sugar is added at any stage of the process: neither during fermentation nor during disgorgement, making Marguet Verzenay Grand Cru a pure, honest, unadulterated Brut Nature.

Taste

In the glass, Marguet Verzenay Grand Cru is refined and profound. The nose opens with notes of ripe apple, pink grapefruit, lightly toasted brioche and an elegant trace of dried fruit. The bubbles are very fine, almost imperceptible, and accompany the wine discreetly. When oxygenated, nuances of fresh butter, clove, orange peel and a slight hint of smoke appear, revealing the ageing in oak used. The palate is vertical, with a sharp but perfectly integrated acidity. The texture is creamy, saline, marked by a chalky minerality that runs through the palate with precision. The finish is dry, long, reminiscent of lemon zest, rye bread and dried white flowers. A jewel of extreme sensitivity, designed for those who love the most naked and elegant expression of Pinot Noir in Champagne.
