Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 30.000 Maravedíes is the entry-level regional red produced with Garnacha from very different parts of San Martín de Valdeiglesias (the three valleys—Alberche, Tiétar and Iruelas). It's a floral, perfumed and elegant effort with nuance and depth that transcends the price point. It only has the disadvantage of the torrid and ripe year that took it to 14.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.42 and 5.23 grams of acidity, good parameters for a ripe Garnacha without excess that still shows the granite effect in its texture, making it long and serious, beyond the fruit. It fermented with indigenous yeasts after macerating with the stems in 3,000- to 4,500-liter French oak vats and matured in oak foudres of different sizes and also concrete vats for 15 months. 13,250 bottles produced. It was bottled in the spring of 2024.

Description
On the moors of the Sierra de Gredos, where the granite soils breathe austerity and the vineyard clings to the relief with stubborn elegance, stands Marañones, a project born not from haste, but from conviction. At the beginning of the millennium, when many were looking towards foreign varieties and globalised techniques, Fernando García decided to go in the opposite direction: to look to the terroir, listen to its pulse, recover old Garnacha vines that others considered unproductive and celebrate high-altitude viticulture with ecological practices and minimal intervention. Thus was born Treintamil Maravedíes, named after the price Don Álvaro de Luna paid to buy the Señorío de San Martín de Valdeiglesias in 1434 - a symbolic statement of the real value of the land.
The wine is a living tribute to the landscape where it was born: poor granitic soils, diverse orientations and altitudes between 650 and 850 metres that dominate the impetus of the Garnacha and other complementary varieties such as Morate and Albillo Real, providing tension and verticality. In this corner of Madrid, influenced by the continentality of Gredos and the cold air that descends the slopes, the vines ripen slowly, preserving freshness, giving rise to an expression of Garnacha that avoids excess, that speaks softly, but with clear intention.
Winemaking
Each plot is vinified separately, in an almost cartographic exercise of the terroir. The grapes are harvested by hand, in small boxes, in order to preserve the integrity of the fruit. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, without additives, in open wood and stainless steel tanks, favouring a gentle but precise extraction. Part of the stem remains, providing nerve and structure. The ageing, which lasts 8 to 10 months, is carried out in large-volume used barrels and vats (up to 4,500 litres), which respect the fruit identity without masking it, while the wine is refined in contact with its fine lees.
Treintamil Maravedíes is not a wine aged in a hurry or with make-up: it is transparent in its process and in its result. It is not clarified or excessively filtered, and it is bottled following the natural cycles of the wine, when it "says it is ready", as Fernando himself often comments.
Taste
At first nosing, the wine is restrained, almost shy. But just swirl the glass to reveal a crisp, delicate red fruit, with notes of sour cherry, fresh raspberry and a wild hint of rose hip. There is also a subtle balsamic presence - rosemary, thyme, perhaps an echo of distant eucalyptus - reminiscent of the scrubland surrounding the vineyards. The background is markedly mineral : wet stone, crushed granite, an aromatic texture that hints at its origin in the poor, sandy soils of Gredos.
On the palate, the wine flows like a taut silk thread : light in body, but firm in structure, with vibrant acidity running through it from end to end. The fruit remains fresh, almost crisp, accompanied by a fine, barely rough tannin that adds tension without aggressiveness. It is a wine that does not seek to dazzle with opulence, but with precision, with rhythm, with an elegance without artifice. On the finish, long and clean, there is a saline and earthy trail that invites the next sip.
Treintamil Maravedíes is not just any Garnacha: it is a Garnacha from Altura, from an extreme climate, from a brave winegrower. It is a wine that speaks of the landscape with an ancient accent, but with modern clarity. A red wine from the mountains, sober and delicious, that finds its place between tradition and the avant-garde.
