Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2023 La Estrecha comes from a vineyard on granite soils that Ponce had the intuition could produce an elegant wine with finesse and floral notes that Bobal can sometimes deliver. It's an old vineyard, and as such, it's not 100% Bobal; all the vineyards have a field blend with a percentage of other varieties, some 10% here, that give nuances. The full clusters fermented in 4,500-liter oak vats, and the wine matured in a single 5,000-liter foudre for 10 months. It has a bright ruby color and a super expressive, clean, elegant and nuanced nose. It keeps the fine-boned character; it's complex, has depth and complexity; the tannins are ultra-refined; and it's very chalky, which gives a seriousness. It's silky but powerful, balanced and fresh, super long. This has to be the finest vintage of La Estrecha. It was bottled in late July 2024 and 5,000 bottles were produced. I also had a bottle of 2008, the second vintage, and the wine was incredibly elegant and complex.

Description
La Estrecha is an exceptional wine that comes from the Manchuela appellation, a region known for its Mediterranean climate with continental influence. This wine is a perfect example of the meticulous work of winemaker Juan Antonio Ponce, who has dedicated his talent to the elaboration of this wine using mainly the Bobal variety.
Winemaking
The Bobal grape, which makes up 100% of this wine, is grown in a singular vineyard called La Estrecha. This vineyard is characterised by its granitic soil and by having vines of approximately 75 years of age. The close distance between the vines means that the grapes are harvested by hand, which adds a touch of authenticity and care to the production.
In terms of viticulture, a biodynamic approach is followed, with no soil enrichment or irrigation. Cover crops are grown and the soil is rarely ploughed, thus keeping the soil structure intact. This sustainable and environmentally friendly approach is crucial to the quality and character of the wine.
The vinification process includes fermentation with indigenous yeasts in large 4,500-litre oak barrels, followed by 11 months of ageing in 600-litre French oak barrels. This wine is bottled without fining or filtering, with minimal sulphur added, resulting in a limited production of only 3,000 bottles.
Taste
La Estrecha is a low robe wine with a cherry colour. On the nose, it offers mineral aromas and floral notes. On the palate, it is elegant and easy to drink, with good acidity, a fine bitterness and a fruity aftertaste. This wine is suitable for vegans and vegetarians and is recommended to be served at a temperature of 16 °C.
