Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2017 growing season saw a couple of violent hail events in the Barbaresco appellation, and this celebrated vineyard suffered some damage during a storm that hit on July 19th. Yields were reduced, but the wine holds its own thanks to the careful fruit selection process put in place by the Gaja family. Their 2017 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo is a shade richer in terms of flavor concentration, as is always the case with fruit from this slightly warmer growing site. However, like the other two single-vineyard Barbaresco expressions, this wine reveals a thin, sharp and nervous personality that is driven in large part by tannic firmness and acidity. Sorì San Lorenzo adds lots of dark mineral definition to cassis, wild cherry, rose and Provence herbs. Like the other wines, it needs extra cellar aging time.

Features

Description

The Barbaresco Gaja Sorì San Lorenzo is one of the greatest jewels of the Piedmontese Nebbiolo. This wine comes from the prestigious San Lorenzo vineyard, located in the heart of the Langhe. It is known for its warmth, robustness, perfect balance and remarkable longevity. Its olfactory palette is rich and elegant, making it a true masterpiece of Italian wine.

Winemaking

This Barbaresco is made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes, carefully selected by the Gaja team during the manual harvest. After vinification, the wine undergoes a double ageing process: first, it spends 12 months in oak barrels and then another year in large oak casks. After these 24 months of maturation, the wine is ready to be bottled and marketed.

Taste

Gaja Sorì San Lorenzo de Gaja has a bright colour reminiscent of garnet. On the nose, it offers an impressive olfactory spectrum ranging from terroir and undergrowth to fresh cherry, blackberries, rose and bitter orange, culminating in notes of spices and aromatic herbs. On the palate, it is warm and enveloping, with a crispness characteristic of Nebbiolo tannin and a balanced acidity that enriches its flavour and persistence. It is a wine that introduces us into the pantheon of the great Italian reds, reaffirming the Gaja winery as one of the myths of Italian oenology.
