Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The super-affordable 2024 Clos Lojen comes from a year that continues the warm and dry conditions of 2022 and 2023 but with lower yields and very healthy grapes. It fermented with full clusters and indigenous yeasts in open-top and well-seasoned 4,500-liter oak vats and matured in a combination of oak vats of different sizes—4,500-, 10,000- and 15,000-liter ones—for six months. Each plot was harvested at the right time, which seems to have increased precision in the cuvée, a fruit-driven, primary and juicy red with similar alcohol as in previous years, 12.5%, a pH of 3.6 and 5.7 grams of acidity. This is a lot more serious than a young and juicy red; it has fruit but with a complexity of flavors, a medium-bodied palate and very fine tannins. It's approachable and ideal with food, but it also has the potential to keep in bottle. It's a champion for quality/price, one to buy by the case. It has one of the lowest production volumes in recent times, 45,000 bottles. It was bottled between April and June 2025.

Description
Clos Lojen, an exceptional wine from the Manchuela appellation, is a pure expression of the Bobal variety. This wine, created by winemaker Juan Antonio Ponce, stands out for its meticulous winemaking and commitment to sustainable practices.
Winemaking
Made exclusively from Bobal grapes, Clos Lojen comes from six different plots: Abuelo, Señorita, Cerro, Lujan, Embudo and Almendros. These vineyards, with vines between 30 and 50 years old, are located on clay-limestone and pebble soils, at about 800 metres above sea level. This altitude contributes to the slow ripening of the grapes, ensuring balanced acidity and a fresh flavour profile.
Clos Lojen 's viticulture is biodynamic, with no soil enrichment or irrigation. The soil structure is kept intact through cover crops and minimal ploughing. Harvesting is done manually, using small 20 kg baskets, and the grapes are cooled for 24 hours until they reach 8°C. Fermentation is carried out in small wooden vats, using whole bunches of grapes and foot trodden grapes. Ageing takes place in French oak barrels of fifth to eighth use, including 1,500-litre foudres and 300-litre barrels, for 7 months. The wine is bottled unfiltered, which preserves its authentic and natural character.
Taste
Clos Lojen offers a complex and satisfying taste experience. The nose is sweet and ripe, with intense aromas of black cherry, blackberry and a hint of baked cherry pie. On the palate, it presents a balanced sweetness, but with a savoury, structured edge. Density and spice combine harmoniously with drying tannins, creating a full and enveloping flavour profile. Well-integrated acidity and lingering fruity and spicy flavours on the finish make this wine an exceptional choice for wine lovers looking for quality and complexity.
