Antonio Madeira A Liberdade 2022

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The white 2022 A Liberdade Branco was produced with grapes from three younger vineyards (20 to 30 years old) planted with six local varieties—Encruzado, Cerceal, Bical, Uva Cão, Barcelo and Terrantez—that are worked biodynamically. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and went through malolactic and matured in used 600-liter oak barrels followed by three months in stainless steel before it was bottled. It has 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.21 and 6.43 grams of acidity, quite fresh. 2022 was a very difficult year with difficult fermentations. The wine has a cloudy color and a slightly blurry nose, without the cleanliness and precision the wine normally has (I tasted a sample of the 2023, and that wine was very different), with something meaty, earthy, intriguing. The palate is still full of energy and full of sapidity, with a little more volatility that lifts it up. A wild white. 4,400 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2023.

Description
Antonio Madeira, a Portuguese of French descent, has his family roots in the foothills of the Serra da Estrela, in the Dão sub-region. In these highlands, Antonio believes he finds the historic heart of the Dão, an area with great potential for ageing wines, where the wines are finer, fresher, more austere and mineral. Since 2010, he has been researching in this sub-region the places that our ancestors chose as the best for vine growing, those that we could call "Grand Crus of the Dão". He has discovered a series of old vines that stand out for the authenticity of their varieties, the characteristics and nuances of their granitic soils and their sun exposure. Among them is the vineyard that gives origin to its wine Antonio Madeira A Liberdade, a 50 year old vineyard rescued from abandonment after not being pruned for 3 years.
Winemaking
The viticultural practices applied in the vineyard are biodynamic. The wine is composed of 70% of 30 year old vines(Encruzado, Bical and Cerceal) and 30% of old vines (90 years old) with a final blend of approximately 20 varieties grown on the granitic soils. Vinification is natural and sulphur-free until bottling. The wine is aged in stainless steel tanks.
Taste
António Madeira A Liberdade is intensely fruity with hints of undergrowth and fennel, saline and incredibly mineral. On the nose, there are notes of pure fruit, fennel, freshness and tension, being crystalline and elegant. On the palate, it has a saline flavour that invites you to repeat, with body and a tasty, long and intense finish on wet granite. It is a perfect accompaniment to fish dishes or a good creamy cheese.
