Buy Wine from Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez
The Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez began in 1994. His work concentrated on forgotten vineyards, and on strengthening vineyards in different and distant areas, such as La Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Valdeorras, Alicante, Toro, Málaga, Cigales, or Ávila.
Meet the founders
Telmo Rodríguez is a winemaker who today has become a reference in Spanish wine. He is an example of the entrepreneurial man who started without land, cellars or barrels, and still creates his first authentic Spanish wine.
His father, Jaime, is the founder of Granja Remelluri, a benchmark of quality in La Rioja for the last 40 years. However, after studying oenology in Bordeaux and gaining experience in the Rhone Valley, Telmo Rodríguez began to write his own history in the Spanish wine industry with his personal project.
He works with Pablo Eguzkiza, his friend and business partner since the early 1980s. This oenologist was a disciple of Jean Claude Berruet. After being responsible for the 1989 vintage in Dominus Napa Valley and doing research work for Château Petrus, he started his new project together with Telmo Rodríguez.
Let's get to know a little bit of the history of this Company through its wines
In 1994, Telmo Rodríguez and Pablo Eguzkiza's company project was born. That year their first wine, Alma en Navarra, was made with Garnacha grapes. It was a time when the trend was to plant cabernet and merlot.
In 1995, a wine was made in Arribes del Duero with the Juan García grape, a local variety of great quality, but very little known.
A year later, in 1996, they bottled the first vintage of Basa, a white wine, in Rueda, the second area explored by this Company.
In 1998, they went to La Rioja, establishing themselves in Lanciego and then in Ribera del Duero, Toro and Gredos, with their marvellous and unique Garnachas at an altitude of over 1,000 metres above sea level.
After acquiring Bodega Pegaso in Ollauri, La Rioja, they explored the slopes of Bibei (Ourense) and Cebreros, to start making the mythical Pegaso.
In 2011, the first vintage of Las Beatas was bottled. This wine is the result of more than 20 years of work, and its aim was to recover the taste of the forgotten Rioja.
Other wines would follow with the same quality and passion for authenticity, under the premise of the exclusive use of native varieties from original areas.
Their vineyards
The Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez y Pablo Eguzkiza has 355 small plots, with more than 40 varieties of native grapes.
Its vineyards cover around 80 hectares, distributed in Valdeorras, Ribera del Duero, Rioja and Gredos, among other areas.
First winery
In 2007, Bodega Lanzaga, their first winery in Lanciego, was built. It has 15 hectares and represents an old model with a human dimension.
Each hectare of native grapes gives rise to a balanced, elegant and fine wine that has the quality of speaking of a specific and unique taste. All the work carried out during the winemaking and ageing process aims to be exceptional, in the pursuit of excellence.
Its philosophy
The Telmo Rodriguez Company bases its philosophy on the exploration of the best wine-growing areas, the use of native varieties from original areas, for the creation of a wine where quality and select distribution in the best markets in the world prevail.
Exploration, passion for authenticity, reflection and deep learning are the backbone of this company's magnificent wines.
