Château Pontet Canet is a domaine viticole placed in Pauillac commune that produces one of the wines with most personality in the whole Médoc. Neighbour to Mouton Rothschild terroir, and classified as 5ème Cru Classé, Pontet Canet is one of those châteaux that keeps on producing wines with an unbeatable quality-price relationship and that in many cases, depending on the year, are second to no big name such as Latour or Mouton to name a few. If you are just a beginner in Bordeaux wines and would like to spare some money wasting, take a chance on Pontet Canet as one of your main options.
It all began in the 18th century, when Jean-François de Pontet purchased some land in Pauillac, only a few metres away from famous maison Château Mouton Rothschild. Jean-François descendants expanded the property with some new plots in Canet area, that's the reason of the estate being known Pontet Canet. In 1865 for unascertained reasons, the property was sold to Bordeaux businessman Herman Cruse, a family who will remain owner of the château for the following 110 years. Finally in 1975, Guy Tesseron obtained the winery and nowadays his sons Alfred and Gérard are managing with real passion one of the most genuine domaines in Haut-Médoc.
Château Pontet Canet has 80 hectares of vineyards in deep and poor in organic matter soils, made of gravel and sand. The prevailing variety is Cabernet Sauvignon (62%), followed by Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (4%) and Petit Verdot (2%), with around 45 years' old vines and a plantation density of 9.500 grapevines per hectare. Since 2010, Pontet Canet has the BIO certification, ever since the use of chemical products has been excluded. All land working is carried out by means of horses.
Which are their main qualities? Château Pontet Canet, with an output of 300.000 bottles, is a wine full of personality, dense, balanced and powerful as good as any Bordeaux grand cru. For its production no modern techniques are used, looking for the perfect maturity grade in the grapevine by lignifications of the stalk. The ageing takes place in French oak barrels (60%) for 16 to 20 months though nowadays they have already started some wine making tests on egg-shaped concrete tanks, following Michel Chapoutier's idea. On the other hand, they have also introduced amphora to the wine ageing process, believing that they are able to supply wine with mineral character, a correct theory indeed and nothing better to proof it than Sicilian Occhipinti wines, with Nero d'Avola variety, to taste its minerality.
Château Pontet Canet, qualitatively difficult to vanquish!
