Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 O Gran Mein comes from a very dry and warm year of healthy grapes and more Mediterranean wines, and it was sourced from a specific historical plot from Mein planted with Treixadura, Godello, Albariño, Torrontés, Loureira, Caíño Blanco and Lado grapes. The vines are worked organically but are not certified. The whole bunches were pressed, and the must fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, concrete, clay and glass; it aged in the fermentation vessels and was kept in bottle for one year. It has herbal notes, hints of flowers and pollen, a moderate 12.6% alcohol, a pH of 3.37 and 5.66 grams of acidity. It's medium-bodied, precise and clean, with a chalky texture and a dry finish. 14,857 bottles and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in June 2023.

Description

In the heart of the Avia valley, where the rivers whisper through the vineyards and the air smells of wet earth and ripe fruit, O Gran Meín Castes Brancas is born. This wine is an ode to Galician tradition, a story bottled by the Viña Meín - Emilio Rojo winery, whose commitment to quality and respect for the terroir can be felt in every sip.
Made from a mosaic of indigenous varieties - treixadura, godello, albariño, torrontés, loureira, caíño blanco and lado - this white is a pure reflection of Ribeiro's diversity. Its vines, planted on terraces that defy the slope of the landscape, drink from the sun and the Atlantic breeze. And beneath their roots, the sábrego - that decomposed granitic sand - gives them the mineral soul that distinguishes this wine.

Winemaking

As in the stories of yesteryear, everything begins with the hands. The grapes are harvested by hand, bunch by bunch, with the care of someone who harvests not only grapes, but also memories. Once in the winery, the grapes are pressed whole, respecting the essence of each variety. Some plots are even trodden, the old-fashioned way, to extract the best from them.
Fermentation is a journey of patience and waiting. It takes place in a combination of stainless steel, concrete, oak and demijohns, allowing each material to leave its mark. The wine then rests for 12 months, refining, developing its character. Finally, it sleeps for a year in bottle before seeing the light of day, ensuring that, when it reaches the glass, it is at its perfect moment.

Taste

Pouring a glass of O Gran Meín Castes Brancas is like opening a window onto the Atlantic. First, the citrus and white flower notes arrive, light and fresh. Then, with each sip, the mineral nuances appear, that sensation of wet stones after the rain, of saltpetre on the skin. The texture is silky, but with nerve, with a balanced acidity that makes it vibrant and full of life.
The finish is long, like those conversations you don't want to end. Each sip leaves a mark, inviting another, and another.
