The regular 2021 Ultreia red plays with the advantage of being sold later, so they are still selling the 2021, which was a cooler year than the 2022, the vintage I tasted for the rest of the range. However, I notice some earthy rusticity and some iron-like notes, licorice and leather. It comes from the zone of Ponferrada, and the wine shows austerity. It had a long maceration and a longer time in barrel, during which time it developer a layer of flor yeast. It is from a plot that struggles to ripen, and the wine is always low in alcohol, consistently the lowest in the range. This is certainly different, but I find it a little difficult with high rusticity.

Description
Ultreia Mencía is a red wine made mainly with Mencía grapes by the Raúl Pérez winery and vineyards in the Bierzo DO.
The grapes come from old vineyards located in Valtuille de Abajo and Salas de los Barrios.
The vineyards are planted in soils with a predominance of clayey soils and, to a lesser extent, stony and sandy soils.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand at the optimum point of ripeness. On arrival at the winery, the grapes are partially separated from the stems and very long macerations of approximately 60-90 days are carried out, without temperature control and with little extraction work. After vinification, the wine is aged for 12 months in 2- and 3-year-old French oak barrels. At the end, this wine is neither filtered nor clarified for bottling.
Taste
Ultreia Mencía is all finesse, elegance and high complexity. It stands out for its floral and fruity aromas, spicy and mineral notes. It stands out for its good acidity, with tannins that are well present without being aggressive and it is easy to drink.

The word ultreia is of Latin origin. This is how the pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago used to greet each other, and it means forward. This is the origin of one of the most popular and appreciated wine collections of Bodega Raúl Pérez, of which this excellent wine is a part.
Ultreia Mencía is a wine of great purity elaborated by the prestigious oenologist and viticulturist Raúl Pérez, and which faithfully represents the Mencía grape variety from Bierzo.
At a gastronomic level, it is the perfect accompaniment to dishes such as grilled red meats, game dishes and sausages.
