The 2017 Reserva Selección de la Familia comes from a very challenging vintage, and the wine produced with Tempranillo and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon has high ripeness at 14.5% alcohol (it was a warm year after the crop was decimated by frost). It feels quite oaky with notes of incense and cigar ash intermixed with ripe fruit and some herbs after it spent 20 months in French and American oak barrels. Traditional with a twist and an herbal side to it. 101,225 bottles produced.

Description
Luis Cañas Reserva Selección de la Familia is a red wine produced by the Luis Cañas winery in Villabuena, La Rioja Alavesa.
This red wine comes from old family vineyards with a soil that ensures a low production of grape clusters.
Winemaking
Luis Cañas Reserva Selección de la Familia has been made from a selection of Tempranillo grapes 85% and complemented with other red varieties (15%).
The grapes come from a selection of old vineyards over 45 years old, planted in very poor soils that ensure excellent quality and low yields.
The soils are clayey, calcareous and sandy with a yield of 6,500 kg per hectare at an altitude between 400 and 700 metres above sea level on slopes. Harvesting is done by hand in 11 kg plastic crates.
The wine is made using traditional vinification methods. The grapes are converted into must. The alcoholic fermentation process is carried out at a controlled temperature in wooden vats and lasts 18 days.
It remains for 20 months in new oak barrels, 50% French and 50% American. Once bottled, the wine remains in the cellar for a further 18 months.
Taste
Its fragrance is intense and very complex. Its spicy notes and earthy nuances stand out together with liquorice notes.
