Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The entry-level 2023 Laya, produced with 70% Garnacha Tintorera and 30% Monastrell from dry-farmed 30-year-old vines on limestone and stony soils fermented in open-top stainless steel vats. It fermented with neutral yeasts and matured for four months in used French oak barrels, where it also underwent malolactic fermentation. It is fruit-driven and easy to drink, juicy, with 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.79 and 5.6 grams of acidity. It has a very dark color and an expressive nose redolent of black olives and tomato vine, notes descriptive of the variety, with a Northern Rhône whiff. It's juicy and round on the palate, with polished tannins. It delivers way above its price point. 160,000 bottles produced, whereas they usually make over 250,000. It was bottled in May 2024.

Description
Laya is a young red wine produced by the Atalaya winery, part of the Juan Gil Bodegas Familiares group. This wine is made mainly from 70% Garnacha Tintorera and 30% Monastrell, coming from vineyards located in the Almansa region, at altitudes between 700 and 1,000 metres above sea level. The soils are predominantly sandy with a high concentration of limestone, which gives a distinctive minerality to the wine. The climate in the area is continental, with rainfall of less than 350 mm per year, which contributes to the concentration of flavours in the grapes.
Winemaking
Vinification of Laya includes separate maceration and fermentation in stainless steel tanks with neutral yeasts. After malolactic fermentation, the wine undergoes a brief ageing in French oak barrels for four months, which gives it structure and complexity without losing its freshness.
Taste
Laya stands out for its deep cherry red colour and a nose that combines elegance and freshness. Aromas of ripe red and black fruits, accompanied by floral and herbaceous notes, create an attractive complexity, while light toasted touches are perceived on the finish. On the palate, the wine is pleasant and fresh, with a balance between acidity and sweet tannins. The sensation is unctuous, with a long, enveloping finish, making this wine a versatile choice for pairing with meat dishes, honeyed rice dishes or traditional stews.
This wine, with a complex but accessible profile, stands out for its freshness, balance and its ability to accompany a wide variety of dishes, consolidating itself as an outstanding option in the Almansa Denomination of Origin.
