Description

La Senda Vindemiatrix is a singular wine of Bodegas La Senda, led by winemaker Diego Losada. This wine is made from a careful selection of grapes from old vineyards located in the region of El Bierzo, specifically in the hills surrounding the village of Hervededo, León. The vineyards are organically farmed and comprise 7 plots that combine red and white grape vines planted together, a traditional practice that respects the biodiversity of the vineyards. The blend of this wine is composed of 80% Mencia, 10% Palomino and 10% Dona Blanca, which are co-fermented to capture the authentic essence of the vineyard.
The characteristics of the vineyard are key to the personality of the wine. Situated at an altitude of 550 metres, the vineyards enjoy an Atlantic climate, which gives them a particular freshness. The soils, composed mainly of clay-limestone with mixtures of quartz and iron, favour a slow ripening of the grapes, increasing their concentration and bringing a marked minerality to the wine. The vines are between 80 and 95 years old, which ensures a low quantity but high quality production, with grapes that offer great concentration of flavours and complexity.

Winemaking

The vinification of La Senda Vindemiatrix follows a minimalist approach that respects the natural environment. Harvesting is done by hand at the beginning of September, with the grapes harvested in small 15 kg boxes to avoid crushing the bunches. The grapes are partially destemmed and macerated for 5 to 6 days in unlined concrete tanks, which allows the must to remain in contact with the skins in a controlled manner, extracting aromas and soft tannins. Subsequently, fermentation is carried out in these same tanks, with indigenous yeasts, respecting the natural expression of the fruit as much as possible.
The wine is aged for 5 months in concrete tanks, which allows it to evolve without the interference of oak barrels, thus preserving the freshness and purity of the fruit. During the ageing process, the wine is neither filtered nor clarified, maintaining its natural, full-bodied character. In addition, a minimal addition of SO2 (approximately 20 mg/l) is made only at bottling, which ensures the wine's stability without compromising its purity. The result is an authentic wine, without significant chemical intervention, which faithfully reflects its origin.

Taste

In terms of organoleptic characteristics, La Senda Vindemiatrix stands out for its vibrant acidity and freshness, typical of the Atlantic climate of the Bierzo region. The nose is dominated by notes of fresh red fruits, such as cherries and raspberries, accompanied by subtle floral and herbaceous hints. On the palate, the wine has a silky and mineral texture, with a good balance between fruit and acidity. The tannins are soft, but well-structured, providing a long, lingering finish with a saline touch, which gives a refreshing and elegant sensation.
