Description
Alice Bouvot, the mind and heart behind Domaine de l'Octavin, doesn't make wines, she grows microcosms. In her native Jura, among clay and limestone soils, she found the perfect balance between intuition and terroir. This is where L'Octavin Charlot was born, a cuvée that seems improvised but is full of intention. The decision to blend Merlot, Molette and Muscat - an unorthodox triad - was not a whim, but a statement: it is not technique that rules here, but the land. Alice works biodynamically from day one, letting insects, herbs, ferments and vines coexist without hierarchy. Her philosophy can be summed up in a phrase she repeats with a half-smile: "I just accompany".
The vines grow in lively soils, rich in limestone and clay, with an exposure that benefits both freshness and concentration. The continental climate of the Jura, with its harsh winters and mild summers, gives the grapes a natural tension. Harvesting is manual, respectful, almost ritualistic. There are no machines or rigid protocols. Each harvest is a conversation with the vineyard.
Winemaking
The winemaking process at L'Octavin Charlot is as free as it is meticulous. The grapes are whole-cluster vatted and macerated for 30 days in vats, without aggressive pumping over or temperature control. Fermentation takes place spontaneously, with indigenous yeasts. The wine then rests in tank for a long period, without wood, without corrections, without intervention. It is bottled without filtering, fining or adding sulphites. In this way, L'Octavin Charlot expresses a liquid truth: that of the year, the soil and Alice's intuition.
Taste
In the glass, L'Octavin Charlot is pure raw energy. Aromatically, it unfurls a bouquet of wild cherry, violet petals and damp forest. As it breathes, notes of clean leather, mild spices and an earthy background reminiscent of roots and undergrowth emerge. The palate is juicy, with a lively acidity that sets the pace. It is not a typical fruity wine; the fruit is present, yes, but wrapped in a halo of elegant rusticity, with fine tannins and a touch of volatility that adds tension.
There is an almost electric tactile sensation: the wine runs over the tongue with nerve, leaving a saline and slightly spicy aftertaste. It is a light, but not weak red. It has muscle, but also poetry. The finish is long, dry, and leaves a mineral trace that speaks of the most untamed Jura. Charlot doesn't try to please everyone, but those he listens to, he seduces them without fail.
