Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Busch's slightly sulfured 2018 Riesling Trocken LS opens very yeasty on the nose but is clear, pure, fresh and stony beyond this curtain. The palate is pure, fresh and light, with a creamy texture but also nervy, vivacious acidity on the crystalline and elegant finish. Certainly a love-me-or-leave-me Riesling, it comes along as bone dry and with a digestible 11.5% alcohol. This is special one that provides real pleasure on the finish. Tasted from lot number 18122 in July 2020. I don't have any experience about how this wine will age, yet it should be at least six years from now, possibly longer and hopefully not shorter.

Features

Description

Clemens Busch Riesling Trocken is a wine that comes from the Mosel region of Germany. It is a testament to the winery's commitment to producing quality wines and is an excellent representation of what the Mosel region has to offer.

Winemaking

Clemens Busch's Riesling Trocken is grown on grey slate from multiple plots in Marienburg, including the portions across the river. These grapes come from a mixture of young and old vines, some of which are up to 50-60 years old. The wine is vinified 60% in 1,000-litre oak foudres and 40% in stainless steel vats. In addition, 20% of the juice undergoes malolactic fermentation. It is important to note that this wine is made following biodynamic practices.

Taste

Clemens Busch Riesling Trocken has a clear, bright yellow colour in the glass. Aromatically, it reveals wonderfully expressive notes of lemongrass, grapefruit and kumquats, complemented by hints of green pepper, juniper and lovage. On the palate, this Riesling starts pleasantly dry, grippy and aromatic. Despite its dry flavour, it enchants with a fine melting and elegantly integrated residual sweetness. This white wine is characterised by an incredibly light and crisp texture. With its fruity acidity present, it impresses with its freshness and liveliness on the palate. The finish of this wine is considerably lingering, accompanied by mineral facets from the slate-dominated soils.
