It was founded in 2006 by three friends, though nowadays only two remain in the business: Santos brothers, Mario and Iván. Aldonia's history starts in 1994 when Mario and Ivan took over from his father and it will not be until the year 2000 when they began harvesting and producing wine to be sold in bulk to third parties. However, Mario and Iván are the fourth generation of a family devoted to wine making. During the second half of the 19th century, in view of the phyloxera attack in French vineyards, their forebears decided to buy some plots and a small winery and engage in wine making in order to sold their wine to French négociants that needed it to fulfil their internationals contracts. Unfortunately the phyloxera pest would also affect Rioja at the beginning of the 20th century with the same devastating consequences. Santos brothers' grandfather maintained the winery activity and replanted again all the diseased vines. The history continued with ups and downs especially during the Spanish Civil War where they suffered significant thefts and break-ins, including the main entrance door destruction, it was a wrought iron structure from which only three crimps could be recovered, that now compose the winery logo. It has a tremendous meaning, as besides the great sentimental value it is a symbol of the intertwined vine shoots as well as the joining of body, mind and soul.
Aldonia owns 16 vineyard hectares that are extremely regarded with the less interventionist possible methods and worked following reasoned agriculture practices. The varieties grown are Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo as well as Viura, Malvasía and Calagraño as far as white varieties are concerned. Prevailing soils have a calcareous base with clay and sand and which vineyards are from 25 to 100 years old.
Aldonia bottled their first wine in 2004, when they considered they could start producing quality wine, once the plots had already recovered and been detoxified. As far as ageing process, the winery has modified the titles and today they are do not follow the young, Crianza, Reserve or Grand Reserve concepts as the ageing of the wines is decided considering their vintage and coupage.
Within their production we would like to mention Aldonia Joven being their most easy and cheerful wine that conveys the personality of the most recent harvest: a true fruit explosion with a very brief period in barrel. The next one is Aldonia Crianza, an example of the tradition Mario and Iván are so proud of, a retro-progressive Rioja style with the latest techniques but also the taste and flavour of the past. Finally the winery's flagship: La Dama, the reading of a landscape, a small and unique plot after which the wine is named, a Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha and Mazuela coupage, with a production of only 10.000 bottles in very particular years.
The annual production of Bodegas Aldonia is 70.000 bottles.
