Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The Sadie Family 2023 Swartland Old Vine Series 'T Voetpad is a blend of Semillon Blanc, Semillon Gris, Palomino, Chenin Blanc and Muscat of Alexandria. It claims to be the oldest field blend in South Africa. The wine is fruity and salty at the same time with lovely white wine tannins that give ample firmness and structure from the back. It matures in large oak casks. The grapes are whole-bunch pressed, and the juice settles over eight hours. It completes malolactic fermentation. The fruit comes from a 1.4-hectare vineyard on weathered sandstone soils. Eben Sadie says he farms this site 'for objectives not for aesthetics.' More words of wisdom; 'The difference between a good farm and a bad farm is five days,' he says of the mistakes that can occur if timing is off in a vineyard. This is a release of 2,400 bottles.

Features

Description

Sadie Family T Voetpad wine is a true gem from a special corner of South Africa. Its name, which means "The Path" in Dutch, comes from Dirk Brand's wheat and rooibos tea estate, where this rustic block of old vines is located. This is undoubtedly the most isolated old vineyard in the country, originally planted to supply the farmer and his neighbours. Its 1.4 hectares are home to varieties established in the Cape since the early days of European settlement, with most of the planting done between 1887 and 1928. Survival without irrigation in this warm northern valley of the vast Swartland region, near the town of Aurora and Elands Bay on the coast, is remarkable. Its precise location has allowed it to survive thanks to an underground river flowing beneath it from the mountains.

Winemaking and ageing

The varieties that make up this wine are: Semillon Blanc, Semillon Gris, Palomino, Chenin Blanc and Muscat d' Alexandrie. It is a blend of all the varieties, which are harvested together in a single morning. The grapes are placed overnight in a cold room and pressed the following day. The must is transferred to an old foudre where it remains until natural fermentation begins. The wine then rests in acacia and oak barrels and foudres for the first 12 months on the lees. Two weeks before bottling, the wine is transferred to a blending tank and about 60 mg/l of sulphur is added to protect it during bottling.

Taste

In Sadie Family T Voetpad, one is left speechless. It is incredibly expressive, with characteristic waxy and lanolin aromas. But what really stands out are the notes of lime, dried straw and a hint of melon. On the palate, it leaves a lingering aftertaste, is incredibly balanced and light. The tannins are soft and the acidity is very subtle on the finish. It is undoubtedly one of the most elegant and refined versions of this vineyard.
