Description

In the silent heart of Segovia, where winters creak and sandy soils hide centuries-old roots, Quintaluna is born. It is the patient and determined fruit of Ossian Vides y Vinos, a winery that, when few others were doing so, opted to preserve the soul of pre-phylloxera Verdejo. In Nieva, at an altitude of almost 900 metres, Ossian found its place among ungrafted vines, some more than 150 years old, which survived phylloxera thanks to the sand and pebble soils. Here, history is not told: it is drunk. Quintaluna is a tribute to this heritage. A wine made with 60% of these centenary vines and 40% of young vineyards certified in organic farming. The extreme continental climate, with marked temperature fluctuations, imprints character, freshness and depth in each cluster. This Verdejo, far from the tropical cliché, offers a sober, mineral and austere expression that shuns the obvious to embrace authenticity.

Winemaking

Quintaluna is harvested by hand, in small boxes, carefully selecting the bunches of grapes. Once in the winery, the grapes ferment spontaneously in small stainless steel tanks, with indigenous yeasts, respecting the identity of each plot as much as possible. The ageing of Quintaluna lasts nine months on its fine lees, in a combination of stainless steel, wooden vats and some used barrels. This process, far from seeking prominence, builds texture, complexity and a subtle balance between volume and tension. No make-up is sought, but transparency.

Taste

Quintaluna presents itself with a restrained and elegant nose: lime peel, raw almond, dried flowers and a faint echo of smoke. Nothing is strident, everything is insinuation. On the palate, the entry is dry and direct, with a firm acidity that supports the wine. The texture is creamy but taut, with a saline finish that recalls the sandy origin of the vineyard. There are notes of ripe lemon, hay and a subtle bitterness, almost of apple seed, which lengthens the memory and compels another sip. It is a Verdejo without disguise, honest and radically singular.

  • 08/01/21 Quintaluna 2018 One of my favourite Spanish white wines, fruity - think melon, peach, yet fresh, with a hint of apple. I know sounds pompous, but I personally absolutely love this wine. We tried in a restaurant in Spain, and have been trying to find it since.
  • 27/05/20 Quintaluna 2018 We had it in the restaurant in Spain, and absolutely loved it - fruity, with excellent acidity to compliment. Really surprised that we can get it online for only GBP 12 per bottle, excellent bargain.
