Description
Malabrigo is the flagship wine of Bodegas Cepa 21, a modern, minimalist winery founded in 2007 by José Moro, in the Ribera del Duero DO. This wine is a single varietal 100% Tempranillo, also known as Tinta Fina in the region, one of the most emblematic varieties of Ribera del Duero. The grapes come from a particular plot called "Malabrigo", located in the municipality of Castrillo de Duero, an area characterised by its continental climate with strong thermal variations between day and night, which favours the optimal ripening of the grapes.
The vineyards are planted between 780 and 850 metres above sea level, which contributes to the freshness of the grapes. In addition, the soils where the vines are grown are sandy-clay, which allows for good water retention and excellent drainage, key factors for obtaining wines with a solid, well-integrated tannic structure. The combination of climate, altitude and soil in this plot gives this wine a unique character, with a clear expression of the terroir.
Winemaking
The Malabrigo winemaking process follows modern techniques with a strong respect for the natural product. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks for 26 days at a controlled temperature to preserve the fruity aromas. Subsequently, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels for 30 days, which gives it a smoother, creamier texture. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, which intensifies its spicy and smoky notes, as well as giving it greater aromatic complexity and a more robust and enveloping structure on the palate.
Taste
Malabrigo has a cherry red colour, bright and intense, with a high robe that denotes its concentration. On the nose, it stands out for its complexity and elegance, with aromas of ripe black fruit such as blackberries and plums, combined with subtle spicy notes from the oak ageing, such as coffee, cocoa and light balsamic touches. On the palate, it is a full-bodied wine, with a silky texture and soft but well-structured tannins. Its persistence is long and pleasant, leaving an aftertaste where the fruity notes blend with the toasted and smoky tones of the oak, offering a complex and well-balanced experience.
