Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Hacienda Monasterio is a blend of 86% Tinto Fino, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Malbec. They only got 170 liters of rain and suffered five heat waves—what happens in Ribera is accentuated at the Monasterio estate—but they were able to manage it quite well. Since 2018, they have been harvesting earlier, in early September, because they have managed to achieve ripeness a little earlier, and it shows in the wine, which has 14.5% alcohol on the label (perhaps a little lower in the real analysis, but they need to round up to half a degree on the labels). The skins were thick, so the vinification was softer to avoid too much extraction. They also did a longer aging in barrel; it's usually 15 to 17 months, depending on the lot, but this year, the average was 17 months and it helped. In contrast, they did a shorter élevage in 2023, because it was what the wine called for. The nose is harmonious and shows no heat or excess ripeness (or oak), and the palate is silky with surprisingly ripe and round tannins, escaping the excess grip I found in many 2022s in the zone. 199,200 bottles produced in total, including some 10,000 magnums. It was bottled in July 2024.

Description
Hacienda Monasterio : A legacy of land and passion Hacienda Monasterio is synonymous with dedication and winemaking artistry in Ribera del Duero, nestled between the iconic towns of Pesquera and Valbuena de Duero. The estate covers 113 hectares, 98 of which are dedicated to vineyards, planted on limestone-rich soils, which give a distinctive mineral character to its wines. With an orientation that favours optimum ripening of the grapes, production is meticulously controlled to obtain a yield of 20-30 hectolitres per hectare after rigorous selection.
Winemaking
Hacienda Monasterio is made mainly with Tempranillo (Tinto Fino), complemented with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and sometimes a touch of Malbec. Vinification is a painstaking process that includes a cold, extended maceration of 30 days and a thorough destemming to ensure maximum extraction of aromas and soft tannins. Ageing takes place in French Allier oak barrels (25% new), where it remains for 18-20 months, achieving a perfect integration of the wood and a remarkable balance.
Taste
In the glass, Hacienda Monasterio displays a bright ruby red colour, attractive and enveloping. Its aroma is deep, with notes of ripe black fruit-plums and blackberries-accompanied by mineral undertones and balsamic touches that evoke the freshness of eucalyptus and black liquorice. The ageing contributes subtle spicy nuances, such as vanilla and clove, which intertwine harmoniously.
On the palate, the wine is silky on the entry, evolving into a robust but balanced structure. The well-integrated acidity adds freshness and prolongs the experience, while the fine, polished tannins offer an enveloping texture. The finish is persistent and elegant, leaving an aftertaste of red fruit and minerality that invites a second glass.
Hacienda Monasterio is a wine that reflects the richness of its terroir and the winery's commitment to excellence, offering an experience that connects the palate with the land and tradition.
