Bodegas Ramón Bilbao was created in 1924 and represents the illusion of its founder Ramón Bilbao and a long road that has been travelled by different generations, preserving its tradition, history and sense of innovation.
The history of the winery
Ramón Bilbao Murga was born in a small fishing village called Etxebarri in 1876, thus beginning his life and his history.
Later, when he was older, he decided to move with his uncle to Anguciana, a village located 5 km from Haro. Before moving, his uncle died and Ramón married his own aunt and soon after his first daughter was born.
In 1899, he moved his store to Haro and in 1914, he opened a grain store and bought some land on the road to Casa Larreina to plant a vineyard.
In 1924, he founded a winery in Calle Cuevas de Haro and in his first harvest he harvested 124,857 kg of grapes.
In 1929, Ramón died, leaving his son Enrique Bilbao to carry on his father's dream.
In 1999 the family business Restoy Zamora Company joins Bodegas Bilbao and Mirto, the wineries' representative wine, is produced for the first time.
In 2016 Bodegas Ramón Bilbao opened its winery in Viñedos la Finca Las Amedias, one of the most iconic and world-renowned vineyards.
Location of the winery
The Ramón Bilbao Winery is located at Avenida de Santo Domingo de la Calzada, 40 in Haro, La Rioja.
This winery was founded in 1924 in the historic centre of Haro. Nowadays, and since the 70s, it is located in a building that has been remodelled consecutively. Nevertheless, it still preserves unforgettable memories that represent part of its history.
In the vineyards of La Rioja there are 205 hectares of own vineyards with an average age of more than 40 years. The vineyards stand out for their altitude and proximity to the mountain slopes.
On the other hand, in the Fincas Las Amedias at an altitude of 770 m, 60 hectares of gravelly, clayey and sandy soils are cultivated with Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc varieties.
Philosophy of Bodegas Ramón Bilbao
The Ramón Bilbao Winery was born from a dream of its creator and its philosophy has been passed down from generation to generation, in short, to produce unique wines.
The wines maintain a fresh and elegant style, with a greater load of fruit. The ageing is carried out in American and French oak barrels, reaching a maximum use of 5 years.
Additionally, the cultivation at higher altitudes is valued, in order to obtain fresher wines. The vineyards include more than 265 hectares of our own vineyards and more than 900 hectares under long-term contracts.
In other words, the soil composition and climatic conditions of the vineyards, as well as the appreciation of the higher altitude and the best grape varieties, define the uniqueness and character of this historic and traditional winery.
