Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Similar to its younger brother, the top-of-the-range 2016 Corimbo I shows superbly, more old style Ribera del Duero, with power and rusticity but also elegance and balance. It has a nose that is complex and subtle, floral and spicy. It's medium-bodied and balanced, with a chalky texture and velvety mouthfeel. It's still a little tannic, but the tannins are fine and elegant and should benefit from some more time in bottle. This has to be one of the finest vintages they have produced in Ribera del Duero.

Features

Description

Corimbo I is the flagship of Bodegas La Horra, a jewel that sums up the best of Ribera del Duero in every sip. This wine is made from 100% Tinta del País, a local variety of Tempranillo, from vines over 60 years old. These vines, located in small plots in La Horra, Roa and other villages in Burgos, are cultivated following organic viticulture practices. The soils of this region are characterised by a mixture of clay and limestone composition, which gives a unique character to the wine.

Winemaking

The winemaking process of Corimbo I is meticulous and reflects a respect for tradition and quality. Alcoholic fermentation takes place spontaneously in French oak vats and malolactic fermentation in barrels. The wine is aged for 16 months in barrels, 80% of which are French oak and 20% American oak, followed by natural stabilisation and clarification with egg whites.

Taste

Corimbo I has an elegant, deep and complex sensory profile. To the eye, it shows an intense cherry red colour with bright edges that reflect its youth and structure. On the nose, it is a display of black fruits such as blackberry and plum, combined with notes of dried aromatic herbs and mineral nuances of Chinese ink and damp earth. In the background, hints of cocoa and tobacco add sophistication to the whole.
On the palate, it is a wine that impresses with its volume and fullness. The characteristic freshness of the brand is balanced by the liquorice sensation. Its tannins are fine and well-integrated, creating a silky texture that culminates in a long-lasting, gourmand sensation, reminiscent of a concentrated consommé. It is a wine to be enjoyed with every sip, ideal to accompany meat dishes and special moments.
