Interview with Manuel Valenzuela from Barranco Oscuro winery

Grape juice, simple processes, respect for the land and extreme viticulture at an altitude of 1368 metres, in Cádiar (Granada). Both the location and the way of working is what gives Barranco Oscuro wines, made in one of the highest vineyards in Europe, their distinctive character. These are the premises behind one of the pioneering wineries in natural wines in Spain, Barranco Oscuro.

The philosophy of Barranco Oscuro focuses on trying to make a quality wine, respecting the natural conditions of the area and the vintage and without chemical products that affect the health of consumers, the people who work in the vineyard and the environment.

Vineyards of Barranco Oscuro

The altitude of the Barranco Oscuro vineyards, located at 1368 metres in Cádiar (Granada), contributes to a variation in temperature that slows down the ripening of the grapes and allows them to maintain a high acidity. In the wines, this results in a balance between alcohol and acidity and a long ageing potential.

Wines of Barranco Oscuro

What characterises Barranco Oscuro wines is their raw material, the grape juice, which is the only thing used in their production. They are natural wines, which are the result of fairly simple processes.

In some cases, they are pressed directly, in others they undergo maceration. Then, the wines rest in stainless steel and/or oak barrels until they are bottled, trying to keep lees and solid elements as low as possible, so they are usually lightly filtered. In addition, they do not have refrigeration equipment.

Among their most outstanding wines, we can find Barranco Oscuro V de Valenzuela, Barranco Oscuro Salvaje Blanco, Barranco Oscuro Ring! Ring! the Barranco Oscuro Salmónido, the Barranco Oscuro Varetúo, the Barranco Oscuro Rubaiyat, the Barranco Oscuro El Pino Rojo, the Barranco Oscuro El Pino Granate, the Barranco Oscuro La Familia, the Barranco Oscuro Garnata, the Barranco Oscuro, the Cerro Las Monjas, the Barranco Oscuro Cardonohay, the Barranco Oscuro Tres Uves, the Barranco Oscuro Musk, the Barranco Oscuro Syrnacha, the Barranco Oscuro Palomo Negro, the Barranco Oscuro Ensayo de Burbujas, the Barranco Oscuro Ensayo de Burbujas Rosé, the La Ví y Soñé and El Canto del Mirlo.
