It must be said that more than 200 different varieties of grape are grown in Spain, of which around 140 are native, but let’s focus on knowing those varieties of grape native of Spain that are most important:

Red grapes

  • Tempranillo: It is known by this name because it matures early. It is the most extended and common varietal in our country. It is also known as ‘Tinta del País’, ‘Tinta de Toro’ and ‘Cencibel’. It ages very well in barrels. It is ideal for carbonic maceration wines.
  • Garnacha tinta: It is very common in our country thanks to its easy cultivation and great production. It is mainly found in Castilla-La Mancha, Aragon, Madrid and La Rioja. It is very commonly used to make rosé cava and sweet wines.
  • Cariñena: Present in hot and dry climates, this type of grape is very rich in tannins, acidity and colouring. It is mainly found in Catalonia, La Rioja and Aragon. It is an ideal variety to make coupages with other varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Priorat Grenache.
  • Monastrell: It is usually used to make sweet wines. It is mainly found in the Mediterranean area. It needs abundant sun and a warm climate for its maturation. It is the grape par excellence in the DOs of Alicante, Valencia, Almansa, Bullas, Jumilla and Yecla. It is one of the last red grapes to be harvested.

White grapes

  • Verdejo: If we focus on the native white grape varieties of Spain there is no doubt that the Verdejo is at the top of the ranking. The white wines that include these grapes present aromas of tropical fruits. This is the most typical white grape of the Rueda A.O.
  • Albariño: The white wines of the Rías Baixas are made from this small grape. With a small and very fruity grain, this variety is capable of producing wines of great quality. It is ideal for both fermentation and ageing in wood.
  • Airén: This is one of the most widely planted white grape varieties in the country. Although it did not enjoy great popularity for a long time, as it was considered a low quality grape, the many advances that have been made have managed to obtain a grape that has nothing to send to the rest.
  • Garnacha blanca: This list must include Garnacha blanca, one of the most fleshy native grape varieties in Spain. It is grown mainly in Aragon, Navarre, Catalonia and La Rioja. It produces wines with great body and high alcohol content.
