Catalonia, a pole of attraction for natural wines

The natural wines of Catalonia are becoming increasingly popular worldwide, making the region gradually become a whole pole of attraction and point of reference for this type of wine within Spain.

In Barcelona, a whole movement has developed around natural wines. There are more and more bars dedicated to the tasting of this type of wine and restaurants where the chefs prefer them to accompany their dishes, so that they can offer more authentic and original flavours to their clients.

Gourmet Hunters‘ catalogue increasingly includes natural wines, which are made without additives or sulphites, in order to respect the expression of the native grapes, soils and vineyards where they are produced.

Within this repertoire, Catalonia is the region that stands out the most, with more than 200 bottles available of all varieties, from red, rosé and white, to sparkling and sweet.

As for the Designations of Origin, it includes Cava, Conca de Barberà, Costers del Segre, Empordè, Table Wine and the famous Penedés, which is also part of the wine routes in Spain.

Some of the most outstanding natural wine cellars in Catalonia

1. Els Vinyerons Vins Naturals

A project by Amós Bañeres and Alex Ruiz Masach, located in the heart of the Penedés, where they make wines only in those vineyards that truly moves them. Its philosophy is simple: few interventions and no oenological products to let the wine follow its own path.

2. Celler La Salada

This winery was launched by Toni Carbó in 2012 on the soils of his family’s estate in Panedés, always cultivated without chemicals and in a sustainable manner. Through a minimal intervention agriculture, the aim is to obtain a great variety in the soil and to achieve wines without additions, which respect the expressions of the grapes and the environment where they are produced.

3. Clot De Les Soleres

This winery is located within the Heredad Ferrer de la Vall, in the municipality of Piera, on a property that has been in the hands of the same family for centuries. Its philosophy in winemaking consists of the least possible intervention and the incorporation of biodynamic criteria.

4. Ton Rimbau

Ton Rimbau’s wines are produced with a minimum of intervention and maximum respect for nature, based on the philosophy of permaculture and biodynamic principles. In addition, these wines have certain distinctive elements: They are aged under water in non-negative underground geological vats, and then marketed in ceramic bottles to protect the wine from the negative impacts of light.
