The Best Wine Routes in Spain

Spain is not only known as one of the countries that produces and exports more wines around the world, but it is also increasingly positioned as one of the most visited destinations by those who want to do wine tourism.

If we look at the figures, the trend is clear: Wine tourism has only grown recently. According to the last Report of the Tourism Observatory of the Spanish Association of Wine Cities (ACEVIN), last year this type of tourism reported an income of more than 85 million euros, which meant a growth of 5.68% compared to 2018. As regards the number of tourists who travelled for this purpose, they were more than 3 million, 3.9 percent more than the previous year.

1. Penedès Wine Route

Located just half an hour from Barcelona and 15 minutes from the beach town of Sitges, the Penedès offers visits to large Cava wineries as well as small traditional family wineries and accommodation in rural landscapes among vineyards. The ideal time of year to visit, in spring or during the grape harvest, from September to October.

2. Marco de Jerez Wine and Brandy Route

This route crosses the eight municipalities that form the Marco de Jerez: Chiclana, Chipiona, El Puerto de Santa Maria, Jerez, Puerto Real, Rota, Sanlucar de Barrameda and Trebujena, which offer a very varied palette of landscapes. Here, you can find more than 30 wineries under the Denominations of Origin “Jerez-Xérès-Sherry” and “Manzanilla-Sanlúcar de Barrameda”.

3. Ribera del Duero Wine Route

Only an hour and a half from Madrid, and located between Valladolid, Burgos and Soria, this route not only offers a very varied and colourful repertoire of landscapes, but also more than fifty wineries under the Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin, young but at the same time internationally recognized for the quality of their wines. One place you cannot miss is the Wine Museum, located in the Castle of Peñafiel (Valladolid).

4. Rioja Alavesa Wine Route

Located in the south of the Basque Country, this route crosses 15 municipalities with medieval-looking villages, has 13,500 hectares of vineyards and nearly 400 wineries under the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin. Among the outstanding activities, you can take part in wine tasting courses, wine therapy treatments and walks among walled villages, vineyards and dolmens.

5. Rías Baixas Wine Route

The Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin extends through the provinces of Pontevedra and A Coruña. The Rías Baixas wine route offers a wide range of wine tourism proposals, including 50 wineries that can be visited, as well as leisure activities and accommodation offers.
