5 Txakolis you should try

The Basque Country is one of Spain’s key wine regions and is famous for its traditional txakolis, young white wines characterised by their acidity, low to medium alcohol content and the fact that they are made from native white grape varieties.

Here we offer you a selection of five txakolis that you can’t miss.

 

1. Gorka Izagirre 2020

Bizkaiko Txakolina’s non-crianza white wine, Gorka Izagirre 2020, with 91 Peñin Points, is a light and crisp txakolí that will surprise you. Made from the indigenous varieties Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zerratia, it has 12.5% alcohol content and is ideal for an aperitif.

 

2. Marko 2019

Another txakoli not to be missed is Oxer Bastegieta’s Marko 2019. Also made from the indigenous varieties Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zerratia, with 12.5% alcohol, it undergoes spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks and is aged for three months on the lees.

 

3. Doniene Gorrondona 2019

The Doniene Gorrondona 2019 is another example that cannot be missing in this selection. Made from Hondarrabi Zuri, Hondarrabi Zerratia and Folle Blanche, with 12.5% alcohol content and controlled alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts.

 

4. Itsasmendi 2020

Another txakoli that will surprise you is Itsasmendi 2020. Aromatic and fragrant, this young white wine from the Itsasmendi winery is made from 100% Hondarrabi Zuri, and has a 12.5% alcohol content.

 

5. UNO 2019

Finally, the UNO 2019 txakoli from the Goianea Koop winery is another must-try. Made from a blend of Hondarrabi Zuri and Riesling, it has 13.5% alcohol and is aged on its lees for five months with batonage.
