Wines for Beer Drinkers

In Spain, as in several countries around the world, such as the USA, Australia, Holland, Austria, Belgium, Norway, Finland, Canada and Japan, beer consumption exceeds – to a greater or lesser extent – that of wine.

If you consider yourself a great beer drinker and you always prefer beer to wine, tell us which is your favorite beer, and we will tell you which wine to try, according to your taste.

1. Light beer

If your thing is a soft, refreshing, cold, light beer, such as a blonde Pilsner Lager, our suggestion is that you try a cold glass of the ancestral sparkling wine Clos Lentiscus Núria Montànega 2017. From the Catalan winery Clos Lentiscus, this wine is made from the Parellada variety, and has only 9.5% alcohol content.

It is a bubbly, fresh and natural wine that goes through a process of spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with native yeasts and an aging of 9 months in the bottle before disgorgement.

2. Pale Ale Beer

If you prefer a full-bodied beer but not too bitter, yours is a sparkling wine with more presence and alcohol content, such as the ancestral wine Strohmeier Schilcher Frizzante 2019 from the Austrian winery Strohmeier.

With an 11.5% alcoholic volume, this wine made from the Blauer Wildbacher variety will give you that bubbly and fresh sensation, although with greater intensity.

This is a natural wine, which undergoes during its elaboration a process of skin maceration during 12 hours, a spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks, and then an addition of yeast and sugar for the second fermentation in the bottle. Finally, it is not clarified during bottling.

3. IPA Beer

If a good glass of IPA beer is your thing, the ideal is a wine that can provide that share of bitterness and complexity in the mouth. A young red wine like the Didier Chaffardon Roulpapille 2018, from the French winery Didier Chaffardon, can be a great option in this case.

Made from the Cabernet Franc variety and with an alcohol content of 13.5%, this wine has the level of alcohol, body and structure that best suits an IPA lover like you.

Despite its bitterness, IPA beers can also be very fruity, as can this wine, which is characterized by being both fruity and juicy.

Finally, it should be noted that this is a natural red wine, made from a process of carbonic maceration, spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with native yeasts and whole clusters, and aging of 6 months in fiber tanks. It is bottled without clarification, filtering or added sulphites.

4. Wheat Beer

If what you like most is a wheat beer, soft and creamy, and even a little sweet, our recommendation is that you try a white wine with aging such as the French wine La Vigne du Perron Bergère 2017.

Made from the Roussane grape variety, it is an exclusive, romantic, deep and mineral wine, with a 13% alcohol content.

It is a natural wine, made from a spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with native yeasts and aged for 12 months in used French oak barrels. It is not clarified, nor filtered, nor does it have added sulphites.

5. Belgium Ale

If you like a soft beer, with the presence of alcohol and a sweet touch as the Belgium Ale, our proposal is a full-bodied, fruity, soft and sweet wine, such as the young red Crianza wine La Bruja de Rozas 2018 from Comando G winery in Madrid.

Made from Garnacha, this is a fruity, juicy wine with 14.5% alcohol content and aged for 7 months in 500 liter French oak barrels.

6. Black beer

If you prefer a black beer that hits you in your mouth, we recommend an aged red wine, with a high content of tannins, such as Château Grand Village 2016 from the Guinaudeau Vignerons winery in Bordeaux (France).

Made from a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it is a wine with an alcohol content of 14.5%, aged for 12 months in new and used French oak barrels.
