Guidelines for serving wine in the best way

When tasting a good wine, it is important to take into account the way and manner in which it is served, whether it is for ourselves at a dinner with our partner or at a meeting with friends. If you want to know how to serve wine correctly, here are some basic guidelines on how to do it. Let’s go!

How to serve wine correctly?

Below, you will find a series of tips or recommendations on how to serve wine and make a good impression on our guests:

  • When serving the wine, do not support the bottle with the glass.
  • It is important not to take the wine glasses up to the top. It is advisable to fill them approximately one third of the size of the glass.
  • If you change the wine, ideally you should change the glass to avoid mixing flavours. If this is not possible, then they should be rinsed with water.
  • When white wines are served, the amount to be served will be even lower, so as to maintain its ideal temperature, which should be fresh. In other words, it is recommended to serve less and more frequently.
  • You should hold the glass by the stem so as not to change the temperature of the wine.
  • Obviously, nothing should be added to the wine (no soda, no ice, no soft drinks, etc.)

Opening the wine bottle

Another essential aspect of knowing how to serve wine is knowing how to open the bottle of wine:

  • You don’t have to move the bottle, you just have to move or turn the corkscrew.
  • The bottle of wine should always be supported on the table, never between the legs or arms, as it will probably end up breaking the cork or the bottle.
  • After removing the cork, a clean napkin or cloth should be taken to clean the mouth of the bottle.
  • You should not drill the cork from side to side, as if you reach the end with the corkscrew you run the risk of cork residues falling into the wine.
  • It is advisable to serve a small amount of wine in the glass that will be discarded in order to clean the mouth and the neck of the bottle and to eliminate any remains that may have remained.

In what order should the wines be served?

In the event that several wines are to be tasted, it is important to follow an order in which they are served. That is to say, it is not only important to know how to serve the wine, but in what order it should be served. Do not forget these guidelines:

  • Age of the wine: The youngest should be served first, and then the oldest or oldest.
  • Colour of the wine: White wines should be served first, rosé wines second and red wines last.
  • Taste of the wine: The softer wines (with less body and alcohol content) should be served first, and then the more intense wines (with more body and alcohol content).
